Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, access to clean water has become an increasingly significant issue around the world. Some people believe that every home should receive a free water supply because clean water is a basic human right. I completely disagree with this statement for two main reasons.

The primary reason why I disagree is that we can't get a water for free. This is because water is not renewable resource. As a result, one day we will run out of clean fresh water if water becomes zerocost. For example, there is a research about making the water free. The result was unbelievable water became useless. Therefore, we have to charge money for watersupply.

Another reason is that charging for water encourages people to use it responsibly. In other words, if we impose a fee they will use it more valuable. Consequently, we won't run out water need. For instance, families who pay for their water are more likely to fix leaking taps and avoid unnecessary water use, which helps conserve this valuable natural resource. Hence, we have to more carefully on using water.

In conclusion, although some people may argue that we have to make the water supply free because water is a basic human right, but I believe that water supply need to demand payment from individuals because we might get into water scarcity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response presents a clear position throughout, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 222 words. This under-length significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the main arguments regarding resource management and conservation are relevant, they are somewhat underdeveloped. The example provided about 'research' is vague and lacks specific detail, which prevents the argument from being fully extended. To improve, you should expand on your points with more detailed explanations or concrete examples to ensure the response is sufficiently developed and meets the length requirement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear central idea. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'The primary reason', 'Another reason', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow is sometimes interrupted by awkward phrasing, such as 'if water becomes zerocost' and 'we won't run out water need'. The use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical, and there is a lack of variety in linking words. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider range of cohesive devices and ensuring that the transition between sentences is smoother and more natural.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. You use some relevant terms like 'natural resource' and 'water scarcity', but there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'get a water for free', 'unbelievable water became useless', and 'use it more valuable'. These errors do not impede communication, but they highlight a limited control over more sophisticated vocabulary. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and using more precise academic terminology rather than relying on basic descriptive phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a water', 'the water'), word forms ('watersupply' should be 'water supply'), and sentence construction ('we have to more carefully on using water'). While the meaning is generally clear, these errors are noticeable and occur throughout the text. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement, the correct use of articles, and ensuring that your sentences are grammatically complete. Practicing complex structures while maintaining accuracy will help you achieve a higher score.
