Student answer (Band 7.0)

Clean water is really important for life. Everyone needs water to drink to cook and to wash. Some people think that every home should get water for free because it is something that everyone needs. I do not completely agree with this idea because people should have water but it should not be free for everyone.

On the one hand the government should make sure that everyone can get water. Poor families might not have money to pay for water and this can make them very sick. If everyone has water people will be healthier. So the government should help families that do not have a lot of money by giving them clean water.

On the hand it costs a lot of money to make clean water available. Clean water has to be made clean tested and brought to homes through pipes. Workers also have to fix and take care of the clean water system. If clean water is free for everyone the government might not have money to keep the system working properly.

In my opinion every person should get an amount of water at a low cost or for free. However, if people use water than they need they should pay for the extra clean water.

In conclusion, clean water is the main structure of the life. So every people on this world worth to get a free water supply. A system where everyone gets an amount of clean water and pays for extra clean water is more practical and fair. We should make sure that everyone has access to water.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that balances the necessity of water as a right with the economic reality of infrastructure costs. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, particularly the distinction between a basic allowance and excess usage. However, the development could be more sophisticated; for instance, the argument regarding government funding could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis of the economic implications. The conclusion is slightly contradictory, as it initially states water should be free for everyone, then immediately pivots back to the more nuanced 'tiered' system proposed in the body paragraphs. A more consistent focus on the practical application of the policy would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences feel abrupt. For example, the transition from the second paragraph to the third could be smoother. Referencing is generally clear, though some sentences lack variety in structure, which makes the progression feel slightly repetitive at times. Overall, the essay is easy to follow and the logical progression is maintained throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There is a basic range of topic-specific vocabulary such as 'infrastructure', 'system', and 'access'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simple, repetitive phrasing like 'clean water' and 'get'. There are also minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'main structure of the life' and 'every people on this world worth to get'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the government', 'a water supply'), subject-verb agreement ('every people... worth'), and preposition usage. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are missing commas in complex sentences, such as after introductory phrases. The student attempts complex structures, but these are often where the errors occur. To improve, the student should focus on mastering basic sentence construction and ensuring consistency in verb forms and article usage to reduce the frequency of errors.
