Student answer (Band 7.0)

In contemporary society, there has been a growing debate regarding whether purified water should be accessible to everyone without any fee. Although it may be a basic human right to consume water, I completely disagree to this viewpoint due to several compelling reasons.

There are several significant drawbacks for the idea of water being free. One major factor is that it may lead to depletion of natural resources. It stems from the fact water will lose its value when it becomes free because people tend to be lavish, acting like it will never run out. Consequently, the biodiversity of nature may fall down since every species is dependent on water. A clear example is that farmers and industries may use water excessively, leading rivers, lakes, and streams to drain and fishes and other species, which live in those waters, to die.

Another compelling factor is that making water free opens the door to industrial exploitation and economic inefficiency. Those data centers and industries, which produces beverages and drinks, will make a fortune because the input resources will be priceless. If water carries no price tag, those industries will try to maximize their private profits, resulting in economic burden. Plus, since, there is no financial fee for water, industries will not try to save the water.

In conclusion, consuming water may be basic need for human but providing water supply without charge has several significant disadvantages. Although, some people may agree to this viewpoint, I strongly oppose it as its impact, including degradation of water infrastructure, running out of water, and economic burden.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have clearly stated your position and maintained it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, focusing on resource depletion and economic inefficiency. However, the development could be further strengthened by providing more nuanced examples or counter-arguments. For instance, while you mention industrial exploitation, explaining how a tiered pricing system could balance human rights with conservation would add depth. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task effectively, providing a clear argument that is well-supported by your chosen points.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'consequently,' 'another compelling factor,' and 'in conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the sentence 'Plus, since, there is no financial fee for water...' is a bit disjointed due to punctuation and phrasing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and each paragraph has a clear central topic, which helps the reader follow your argument without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'depletion,' 'biodiversity,' and 'economic inefficiency.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'fall down' instead of 'decline' or 'diminish,' and 'priceless' (which usually means invaluable) instead of 'free of charge' or 'costless.' Despite these occasional errors, your vocabulary is adequate for the task, and your meaning is always clear. To reach a higher band, focus on more precise collocations and avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I completely disagree to this viewpoint' (should be 'with'), 'those data centers... which produces' (subject-verb agreement error), and 'consuming water may be basic need' (missing article). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some unnecessary commas, such as in 'Plus, since, there is no...'. These errors do not impede communication, but they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Increasing your control over complex sentence structures will improve your accuracy.
