Student answer (Band 7.5)

Many people believe that the freedom of having clean water is a basic need, therefore, every home should have access to a water supply that is completely public. Even though, I mostly agree with the statement, there are many factors that may affect the outcomes of having a free water supply, in both environmental and economic aspects.

The main good points about having no boundaries when using water is its necessity and effects on humans health. Many countries haven't accomplished this privilege, for example, in some areas of Saudi Arabia don't have water resources, which makes the environment difficult for humans and other organisms to live. Granting the availability of substantial clean water supply would provide them with survival. Another thing is that, it could support hygiene, which is vital for human health and overall well-being. For instance, not only drinking, but also for washing and sanitation. Recent surveys indicate that with pristine water resources can help individuals to avoid diseases like typhoid and diarrhoea.

However, limitless water could harm the environment. In Mongolia, the clean water supply is declined to only 30% due to mass desertification, which has the risk of shrinking in the following decades. Consequently, it could lead Mongolia to fight for water resources, bringing its natives into warfare. To dodge this, the authorities that are responsible for the economy must put taxes on water in order to balance overconsumption and the recovery of nature.

To sum it up, while I believe that clean water is a crucial necessity for humans, which grants organisms good health and hygiene, I consider setting considerable boundaries for the water supply to be the best approach. Nevertheless, I agree that clean water access should be available to every household for free, if the potential risks are avoided.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position on whether water should be free. You balanced the argument well by discussing the necessity of water for health while acknowledging the environmental risks of overconsumption. Your ideas are relevant and generally well-supported with examples like Saudi Arabia and Mongolia. To reach a higher band, ensure your conclusion directly addresses the prompt's core tension more explicitly; while you mention 'potential risks,' clarifying how these risks can be mitigated while maintaining the 'free' aspect would strengthen your argument. Overall, your position is consistent and well-developed throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'However,' 'Consequently,' and 'To sum it up' to guide the reader through your argument. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the benefits from the drawbacks. To improve, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, in the second paragraph, 'Another thing is that' is slightly informal and vague. Additionally, some transitions between sentences could be smoother to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with some precision, using terms like 'mass desertification,' 'pristine,' and 'overconsumption.' There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'freedom of having clean water' (which is slightly unnatural) and 'the clean water supply is declined' (should be 'has declined'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some collocations could be more natural. Expanding your range of academic collocations and ensuring precise word forms will help you move into the higher band range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'in some areas of Saudi Arabia don't have water resources' (a redundant subject) and 'with pristine water resources can help' (an unnecessary 'with'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are some minor errors in comma usage. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed without unnecessary prepositions or missing subjects.
