Student answer (Band 7.0)

One of the basic human rights is clean water that should be supplied to each and every home for free of cost. While many nations around the world face issues regarding clean water, I truly believe that access to clean water should be made easy.

In every country, people highly depend on clean water for their everyday chores such as washing clothes, cleaning dishes, bathing, drinking and so on. If water is not clean, people suffer from various illness, specially the children that can lead to death. This is because as people are highly depending on water for their everyday activities, contaminated water can causing water-borne diseases. For example, in Bangladesh, every year, a lot of individuals suffer from typhoid which occurs because of dirty water; these unclean water contains bacteria that cause typhoid. So, clean water supply should be ensured for the safety and health benefits of the people.

Several cities and towns in different countries have to pay an amount of money to get access to non-contaminated water which was supposed to be free of charge. This not only creates extra pressure in the family's income, but also is unethical as clean water is our basic human right. If every home is given clean water supply without any money, people will be more benefitted because they do not have to spend extra wages separately on water. For instance, government of India had ensured clean water in several villages without charging any money; this made people lives easy as before taking this step, people had to search for clean water facing difficulties.

In conclusion, although clean water supply is not ensure in many parts of the world, in my opinion, access to clean water should be made easy and made free of charge owing to the fact that this might save the lives of many people from diseases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of free water access. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples from Bangladesh and India. However, the development is somewhat basic. While the argument regarding health and economic burden is clear, the essay could be improved by exploring the potential counter-arguments or the practical implications of such a policy (e.g., how governments would fund this). The position is consistent throughout, but the depth of analysis remains at a moderate level, which is characteristic of a Band 6.5 or 7.0 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the health argument from the economic argument. Cohesive devices such as 'For example', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' are used to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there is occasional repetition of phrasing (e.g., 'clean water' is repeated frequently). The progression of ideas is generally smooth, though the connection between the economic argument and the example of India could be more tightly integrated to improve flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'water-borne diseases', 'contaminated', and 'unethical'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler terms. Some word choices are slightly awkward, such as 'free of cost' (which is redundant) or 'people lives easy'. To reach a higher band, the student should incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing to demonstrate a more flexible control of language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'contaminated water can causing' (should be 'can cause'), 'these unclean water contains' (should be 'this unclean water contains'), and 'is not ensure' (should be 'is not ensured'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the student should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice constructions.
