Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is widely believed that access to clean water should be financially and ethically obligated by the government to provide basic life supplies for maintaining human lives and human rights.
I completely agree with this view because clean water shouldn’t be a burden for people’s households and for people who live with poverty, they wouldn’t be able to afford this basic life necessity and couldn’t stabilize their health.
First and foremost, clean water is absolutely indispensable for sustaining bodily function. Without it, individuals would be unable to survive and keep themselves healthy. For instance, people usually need water to prepare their meals and they usually need to consume clean water at least 2 liters per day for sustaining their well-being. Therefore, clean water should be provided by the state and not be a financial burden on individuals across the country. Furthermore, individuals living in poverty are particularly vulnerable to water insecurity. Without free access to clean water, low-income households may be forced to consume contaminated water, leading to severe infections and waterborne diseases, for instance, diarrhea, giardiasis and other severe illnesses caused by pathogenic living organisms. Therefore, governments should treat clean water as public welfare services rather than a social burden.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that clean water should be freely provided because clean water is essential for sustaining people’s life and some households with low-income are lack of clean water for consuming leading to risky severe diseases. Government must therefore treat water as a public welfare service to ensure equal access to all of the citizens.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt and maintains a clear, consistent position throughout. The arguments regarding health and poverty are relevant and logically developed. However, the development could be more sophisticated; for instance, the discussion on 'public welfare' could be expanded to consider the economic implications or the role of taxation, which would elevate the response to a higher band. The ideas are well-supported with examples like the daily water requirement and the mention of specific waterborne diseases, which demonstrates a good understanding of the topic. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points and reinforces the initial stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions are slightly repetitive or mechanical. Referencing is mostly clear, though some sentences could be linked more fluidly to improve the overall cohesion. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and appropriate for the task. You have successfully used topic-specific terms such as 'indispensable', 'vulnerable', 'water insecurity', and 'pathogenic living organisms'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'financially and ethically obligated by the government' (which is slightly awkward) and 'are lack of clean water' (should be 'lack clean water'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the range of vocabulary is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and with some precision. To improve, focus on more natural collocations and varied phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several error-free sentences, which is positive. However, there are recurring grammatical slips, such as 'clean water shouldn’t be a burden for people’s households and for people who live with poverty, they wouldn’t be able to afford...' which contains a comma splice and slightly awkward phrasing. Another example is 'some households with low-income are lack of clean water'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring subject-verb agreement would be beneficial.
