Student answer (Band 6.5)

In this essay we will discuss whether every home should have a free water supply or not before concluding that clean water is a basic necessity and every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.

While some people might argue that giving a free water supply would lead to people wasting water and eventually wasting resources. This is a fact that people value more what they pay for but a basic human need like clean water should not depend on your financial class. People who cannot afford huge water bills should be considered and government should take measures to save water and make more dams. Not having access to clean water can cause serious health problems, including skin problems and stomach problems. For example, in rural areas of Pakistan the access to clean water is very limited due to which people in rural areas are facing much more skin problems and their gut health is more compromised than the people living in urbane areas.

Giving free access to clean water can lessen the financial burden on people who are already struggling with the inflation. This type of basic things should be provided for every person regardless of the ethnicity, gender, and financial class. Government should take this matter under consideration and install filters and water hand pumps in rural areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position, but it fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 225. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While you present relevant arguments regarding health and financial burden, the points are somewhat underdeveloped. To improve, you should expand on your examples, such as the situation in Pakistan, by explaining the broader implications or providing more detailed evidence. Because the essay is under-length, the depth of the argument is limited, which prevents it from reaching a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'While some people might argue' and 'For example', to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is a bit abrupt. Additionally, some sentences are slightly disjointed. To improve, ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence and use a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in contrast') to create a smoother flow between your arguments and examples.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your meaning clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'financial burden', 'inflation', and 'basic necessity'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'urbane areas' (which should be 'urban areas') and 'this type of basic things' (which should be 'these types of basic things'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise and academic vocabulary, and be careful with word forms and collocations to ensure your writing sounds more natural and professional.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'due to which people in rural areas are facing much more skin problems' and 'government should take this matter under consideration'. Some sentences are also slightly fragmented or lack proper punctuation. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Additionally, try to vary your sentence structure further by using more complex clauses to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
