Student answer (Band 6.5)

Water is probably the most essential resource in order for human civilization to survive . Every year millions of people die due to lack of access of clean water as diseases like cholera , diarrhea and other viral diseases are caused by this. If the government decides to provide clean water for free to all homes these disastrous deaths can be avoided . Also that as it would lead to improved health of the society overall it would help the economy as people take lesser days off due to sick leave improving output of the economy, allowing for it to cover the cost of the free clean water being provided .

However its not always the case that it is possible for the government to provide free clean water without a charge as costs like transportation of the water , its filtration by using water filtration plants in order to clear water from impurities and make it drinkable costs a hefty amount of money which becomes even costlier as the scale of this process increases making it impractical to provide a constant clean water supply with no cost whatsoever.

In my opinion I do not agree that a clean water supply should be provided free of charge rather the government should set a quota of water which covers essential activities like cleaning , bathing and cooking which would be provided free of cost and after that any excess supply should be taxed according to the ability of each household

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by presenting a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding economic feasibility and practical implementation. However, the essay falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. While the ideas are relevant, the development is somewhat limited due to the brevity of the text. To improve, you should expand on your arguments with more detailed examples or a more thorough exploration of the counter-arguments. The position is consistent throughout, but the lack of sufficient length prevents a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into three paragraphs, moving from the benefits of free water to the practical challenges and finally your own proposal. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'In my opinion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions could be smoother. For example, the transition between the health benefits and the economic impact in the first paragraph is a bit abrupt. Using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'essential resource', 'disastrous', 'impractical', and 'excess supply'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'take lesser days off' (should be 'fewer') and 'costs a hefty amount of money' (which is slightly informal). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Incorporating more academic collocations and precise terminology would help elevate your lexical resource score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the government', 'the society'), punctuation issues (spaces before commas), and awkward phrasing like 'lack of access of clean water' (should be 'to'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to affect the overall accuracy. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement, correct article usage, and refining your sentence structure to ensure that complex sentences are constructed with greater grammatical precision.
