Student answer (Band 6.5)

People argue that access to clean water is a basic human right and that every home should be granted water free of charge. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this statement before explaining why I disagree with it.

Beginning with the advantages, all over the world people struggle to make ends meet in their day to day life and provide for their families. This could be because of many different factors including paying for their rent, groceries, and school bills of their children. Taking the stress of the water bill off their head would allow them to spend this money else where. Moreover, providing water directly at their homes would greatly help people living in the rural areas in Africa where people have to travel miles to restock water while carrying the weight of water buckets or drums. This would again relief stress and they could utilize this time in something more productive and make their lives better.

By contrast, the disadvantages say otherwise as providing free water would come at a cost. Due to the lack of education all over the world people will stat to miss use the water which will ultimately cause scarcity of fresh clean water. Additionally, there is no guarantee that people will spend the free time or extra money that would have been used for water in a productive way. Lastly, before taking such motive it would require huge sums of money.

In conclusion, I believe fresh water should be provided at a cost which would remind people continuously not to waste it and this would also help in sustaining water for the future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. You have identified both sides of the argument before concluding with your own view. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about rural Africa is a good start, but it could be expanded with more specific reasoning on how free water infrastructure would be funded or maintained. The argument regarding 'misuse' of water is relevant but remains a general assertion. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully extended with clear logical steps or illustrative examples that directly reinforce your stance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Beginning with', 'Moreover', 'By contrast', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more sophisticated. For example, in the second paragraph, the transition between the financial benefits and the rural infrastructure point is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, allowing you to convey your ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'scarcity' and 'sustaining', which are used appropriately. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'stat to miss use' (start to misuse), 'take such motive' (take such a measure), and 'spend this money else where' (elsewhere). To improve, focus on mastering collocations and ensuring that your word choices are precise and natural in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'all over the world people struggle' (missing comma), 'relief stress' (relieve stress), and 'in something more productive' (on something). Additionally, there are issues with article usage and verb forms. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will help improve your accuracy.
