Student answer (Band 7.0)
People argue that access to clean water is a basic human right and that every home should be granted water free of charge. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this statement before explaining why I disagree with it.
Beginning with the advantages, all over the world people struggle to make ends meet in their day to day life and provide for their families. This could be because of many different factors including paying for their rent, groceries, and school bills for their children. Taking the stress of the water bill off their head would allow them to spend this money elsewhere. Moreover, providing water directly at their homes would greatly help people living in rural areas in Africa where people have to travel miles to restock water while carrying the weight of water buckets or drums. This would again relieve stress and they could utilize this time in doing something more productive and make their lives better.
By contrast, the disadvantages say otherwise as providing free water would come at a cost. Due to the lack of education all over the world people will start to misuse the water which will ultimately cause scarcity of fresh clean water. Additionally, there is no guarantee that people will spend the free time or extra money that would have been used for water in a productive way. Lastly, taking such a huge step would require huge sums of money.
In conclusion, I believe fresh water should be provided at a cost which would remind people continuously not to waste it and this would also help in sustaining water for the future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument and clearly stating a position in the introduction and conclusion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the financial burden on families and the logistical challenges in rural Africa, these points could be expanded with more specific examples or deeper analysis. The counter-arguments regarding misuse and cost are relevant but remain brief. To reach a higher band, ensure that each point is fully extended with a clear link to the central argument, providing a more comprehensive exploration of the topic.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the advantages, disadvantages, and your personal stance. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Beginning with', 'By contrast', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, the transition between ideas within paragraphs could be smoother. Some sentences feel slightly disconnected, and the use of cohesive devices is sometimes a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a tighter flow between sentences would enhance the overall coherence.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'make ends meet', 'logistical challenges', and 'sustaining water' are used effectively. There are some instances where word choice could be more precise, such as 'restock water' (which is slightly unnatural in this context) or 'do something more productive'. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated collocations and topic-specific terminology would help elevate the lexical range. The spelling is accurate throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most sentences are clear and easy to follow, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are a few minor errors, such as 'in doing something' (which could be 'to do something') and the phrasing 'take the stress of the water bill off their head' is a bit informal. The punctuation is generally correct, and the errors present do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, to demonstrate greater flexibility.
