Student answer (Band 7.0)

People argue that access to clean water is a basic human right and that every home should be granted water free of charge. This essay will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this statement before explaining why I disagree with it.

Beginning with the advantages, all over the world people struggle to make ends meet in their day to day life and provide for their families. This could be because of many different factors including paying for their rent, groceries, and school bills for their children. Taking the stress of the water bill off their head would allow them to spend this money elsewhere. Moreover, providing water directly at their homes would greatly help people living in rural areas in Africa where people have to travel miles to restock water while carrying the weight of water buckets or drums. This would again relieve stress and they could utilize this time in doing something more productive and make their lives better.

By contrast, the disadvantages say otherwise as providing free water would come at a cost. Due to the lack of education all over the world people will start to misuse the water which will ultimately cause scarcity of fresh clean water. Additionally, there is no guarantee that people will spend the free time or extra money that would have been used for water in a productive way. Lastly, taking such a substantial step would require huge sums of money.

In conclusion, I believe fresh water should be provided at a cost which would remind people continuously not to waste it and this would also help in sustaining water for the future generations

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The essay addresses the prompt well, providing a clear position and discussing both sides of the argument. The ideas are relevant, such as the economic burden on families and the potential for water wastage. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat brief. For instance, the point about rural Africa is a strong example, but it could have been expanded further to fully explore the implications of infrastructure versus cost. The conclusion clearly restates the writer's stance. To reach a higher band, ensure that each body paragraph provides more depth and specific evidence to support the claims made.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the advantages and disadvantages. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'By contrast', and 'Additionally' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition between the discussion of rural Africa and the conclusion of that paragraph is a bit abrupt. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'substantial step' and 'sustaining water'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing like 'make ends meet' or 'huge sums of money'. To improve, the writer should aim for more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The word choice is accurate, and there are no significant spelling errors that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and the meaning is always clear. However, there are some minor errors in punctuation and phrasing, such as 'in doing something more productive' (should be 'to do') and 'the disadvantages say otherwise' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While the writer attempts complex sentences, the control is not entirely consistent. Increasing the variety of complex structures and ensuring greater precision in grammatical accuracy would help in achieving a higher band score.
