Student answer (Band 7.0)
Water is one of the most essential resources for human beings. It supports our lives in many aspects, and we can not live without it; That is why there are people saying ‘water is the source of life’. However, in terms of providing clean water for every home free of cost, I hold a negative standpoint. This essay will explain why I do not agree with this opinion.
Firstly, providing clean water for free will lead to the abuse of using water, because there would be a strong possibility that people will see water as an infinite resource since there is no cost to using it. Therefore, people will no longer cherish water resources. This will cause a significant increase in water consumption and waste , and severely burden the water supply system in the city. The budget for water management will also increase, which means there will be less expenditure in other parts of social welfare. Eventually, the quality of our lives will be inevitably affected.
Secondly, humans are not the only animal that needs the water. Outside of the human world, there are numerous animals that also rely on water. There are already reports in many places reflecting that some of the wildlife died because of the water shortages. Some of the environments are experiencing the problem of drying up. These examples are warning us that we should pay attention to the effects of human activities. Hence, the increase in water use in human society will worsen this situation. Although we usually tend to put human well-being first, we should still arrange to achieve a balance between humans and nature.
In conclusion, I regard providing water for free as not being a good practice, because it will lead to the waste of water, ultimately lowering the quality of our lives. We should also be aware that there should be a balance between human water use and the natural environment

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have clearly stated your position against providing free water and maintained this stance throughout the essay. The response addresses the prompt well, providing two distinct arguments: the risk of resource abuse and the environmental impact on wildlife. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. To reach a higher band, you could further develop the second point by linking it more explicitly to the economic argument, perhaps by discussing how water pricing could fund conservation efforts. Overall, you have addressed all parts of the task with a clear, consistent argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader through your argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. While the structure is effective, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat standard; incorporating a wider variety of linking phrases or more sophisticated referencing would enhance the flow and elevate the score further.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'infinite resource', 'water management', and 'social welfare' are used accurately. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and repetitive phrasing, such as 'abuse of using water' (which is slightly unnatural) and the repeated use of 'water' as a noun. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations and synonyms to avoid repetition. The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but lacks the flexibility and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, and your meaning is generally clear. There are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'humans are not the only animal that needs the water' (should be 'animals' and 'need water') and a punctuation error in the first paragraph ('it; That'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and ensure that complex sentences are constructed with greater precision and fewer punctuation errors.
