Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the argument, though the position is somewhat contradictory. The student initially argues against free water due to wastage, then pivots to supporting free water as a human right. This lack of a clear, consistent position throughout the essay impacts the development of the argument. While the ideas are relevant, they are often under-developed or expressed with limited clarity. To improve, you should decide on a firm stance early on and ensure that each paragraph supports that specific position rather than oscillating between opposing viewpoints.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'Another side' or 'First foremost'. The logical progression between sentences is frequently interrupted by grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, making it difficult to follow the flow of ideas. For example, the transition between the argument about wastage and the argument about human rights is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence logically follows the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are frequent errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'comical' instead of 'chemicals', 'caster clear' instead of 'clean', and 'free charge' instead of 'free of charge'. These errors occasionally impede communication, requiring the reader to guess the intended meaning. To reach a higher band, you should focus on learning collocations (words that naturally go together) and expanding your range of vocabulary to express complex ideas more precisely, rather than relying on basic, sometimes misused, terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and there are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and syntax. Issues include subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'people will be gave'), article usage, and sentence fragments. Complex structures are attempted but are often faulty, leading to confusion. For instance, 'if something is free of cost, then people will be gave no value' contains multiple errors. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, such as correct verb tenses and word order, before attempting more complex structures. Proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and incorrect verb forms is essential.
