Student answer (Band 7.0)

Access to clean water is a basic human right, and every household should have a reliable water supply free of charge. I strongly agree with this view because water is essential for human survival and the government has a responsibility to provide its citizens with basic necessities.

Water plays a crucial role in our daily lives. It is required not only for drinking but also for cooking, cleaning, bathing, and other household activities. Therefore, everyone should have access to safe and clean water regardless of their financial situation. It should be the government's responsibility to provide a hygienic and reliable water supply to every household. For instance, rainwater, rivers, and lakes are important natural sources of water, and governments can construct dams and other infrastructure to store and distribute this resource for public use. Providing a basic water supply free of charge would also help low-income families meet their essential needs without facing an additional financial burden.

Moreover, people pay taxes to the government, so providing basic public services should be one of its primary responsibilities. Ensuring access to clean water can also contribute to the development of a healthier and more productive society. Unfortunately, there are numerous areas in Pakistan where households, particularly in rural communities, lack access to a reliable supply of clean drinking water. As a result, some residents have to travel to other areas to collect water for their daily needs. For example, several rural regions of Pakistan, including parts of Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, face difficulties in obtaining safe drinking water. This demonstrates the importance of improving water infrastructure and ensuring that every household has access to this essential resource.

In conclusion, I strongly believe that every household should be provided with a basic water supply free of charge. Since clean water is essential for survival and citizens contribute to public services through taxation, the government should ensure that everyone has access to a safe and reliable supply of water.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have taken a clear position from the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. The arguments are well-developed, particularly the point regarding the government's responsibility and the practical example of water scarcity in Pakistan. You have effectively balanced the theoretical argument of water as a human right with the practical implications of infrastructure and taxation. The ideas are extended logically, providing a cohesive argument that directly answers the question. The response is well-structured and demonstrates a strong understanding of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme: the first focuses on the necessity of water, the second on the government's role and the specific example of Pakistan, and the conclusion summarizes the main points. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'As a result' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. The flow of ideas is smooth, making the essay easy to follow from start to finish.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic task. Phrases like 'financial burden', 'essential needs', and 'public services' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is generally precise, it is functional rather than highly sophisticated. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more nuanced collocations or less common academic vocabulary. However, the current range is sufficient to convey your ideas clearly and effectively without any noticeable errors in word choice or collocation that would impede the reader's understanding.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex sentence structures, such as the use of conditional and causal clauses (e.g., 'Since clean water is essential... the government should ensure...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that distract the reader or cause confusion. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex forms to maintain a professional and academic tone throughout the piece.
