Student answer (Band 6.0)
Water is an essential part of human life. This has led to a debate over whether governments should provide water for free of cost. I strongly agree that providing clean drinking water would be an effective way to reduce health problems and encourage a healthier lifestyle.
One of the main reasons for providing access to water is its direct link to health. Nowadays, water in urban areas has become more polluted, which has led to numerous health issues, including diarrhea and heart disease. For instance, due to rapid population growth in the Kathmandu Valley, people in central areas are facing severe water shortages. Therefore, the government should improve drinking water facilities to improve population health and provide awareness in every part of the country.
On the other hand, the need for fresh water can be fulfilled by government incentive programs, such as providing every household with a water purifier. When such products are easily accessible to the public, people tend to consume them regularly, which can lead to clean water and a healthier life. For example, many organizations are building water infrastructure, replacing traditional tap water, in rural areas. In addition, providing healthy water access keeps people's lives sustainable and balanced. As a result, healthy water helps people live a better social life.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that governments should initiate proper water facilities and infrastructures to improve people's health and encourage healthier lifestyles. Overall providing better products and reducing health issues leads to practical and necessary steps toward a healthier society.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in favor of free water access. However, the development is somewhat uneven. While the health benefits are well-argued, the second body paragraph shifts focus toward 'government incentive programs' and 'water purifiers' rather than directly addressing the core argument of whether water should be provided 'free of charge' by the government. The link between providing a purifier and the concept of free water supply is slightly tenuous. To reach a higher band, ensure that every supporting point directly reinforces the specific stance on the economic provision of water rather than general infrastructure improvements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'One of the main reasons', 'On the other hand', and 'As a result' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the connection between the ideas in the second body paragraph could be smoother. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the logical flow between the concept of 'free water' and 'water purifiers' could be more tightly integrated to improve the overall cohesion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use some topic-specific vocabulary such as 'infrastructure', 'incentive programs', and 'sustainable'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing like 'better products' or 'better social life', which lacks precision. To improve, the student should aim for more sophisticated collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express complex ideas more precisely rather than relying on general descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over basic grammar, and errors are infrequent enough that they do not impede communication. For instance, 'This has led to a debate over whether...' is a well-constructed complex sentence. However, there are minor issues with phrasing, such as 'free of cost' (which is redundant; 'free' or 'at no cost' is preferred) and 'provide awareness', which is slightly unnatural in this context. Increasing the variety of complex structures and refining word choices would help elevate the score.
