Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some believe every household should have a free of cost water access as purified water is considered a general human right. I agree with the statement because people should not pay for basic needs and can spend the money on something more important.

People should not generally waste money on something so basic like water in everyday life. As human beings, we have the right to use water at any time of the day without caring about the cost that comes with it because we use it for almost everything on a daily basis such as, preparing meals, cleaning, drinking, showering and so on. Basic needs come with just being born and so it should be free. For example, in Japan, every house has free access to water because their government really care about the standard of life and basic human needs. Hence, the country is peaceful and more happy.

Moreover, the monthly expenditure of water supply can easily be spent on something else which is crucial. Many poor to middle class families have to lead their lives within a tight budget which stop them from investing on skills, entertainment, education, future or sometimes better health. Therefore, if the water supply is free, they can spend the money on something else which has more value to them. For example, my cousin started guitar lesson recently after moving to an apartment where daily water supply was free so his parents used that money on his passion.

In conclusion, i agree that water supply in households should be free of cost as basic human needs should be free as well as money kept for water bill can be used on something more meaningful.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. The arguments are relevant, particularly the focus on economic relief for families. However, the development of ideas is somewhat simplistic. The example regarding Japan is a broad generalization that lacks specific evidence or nuance, which limits the depth of the argument. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more sophisticated reasoning, perhaps acknowledging the complexities of infrastructure costs or government taxation, rather than relying on the assumption that free services automatically lead to a 'peaceful and happy' society. The conclusion effectively summarizes the main points, but the overall development remains at a standard level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear central theme. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Therefore', and 'In conclusion' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the use of 'For example' is predictable. Referencing is generally clear, though the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of cohesive structures to link ideas more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas from the basic right to the economic benefits is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to express your ideas clearly. You use some topic-specific terms like 'monthly expenditure', 'tight budget', and 'basic human needs'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'something more important', 'something else'). To improve, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common lexical items. For example, instead of 'something more important', you could use 'a more pressing financial priority'. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choices do not impede communication, but the range is not yet sophisticated enough for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical slips. For example, 'every household should have a free of cost water access' is awkward; it should be 'free access to water'. There are also minor errors in article usage and pluralization, such as 'guitar lesson' instead of 'guitar lessons'. Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where commas are used incorrectly or omitted in complex sentences. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but the lack of error-free complex structures prevents a higher score in this criterion.
