Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is hard to imagine a home without running water. Water is the source of life. This ideology is presented in many religions, works of art and activist movements. It is a basic human right that supports health and living. That being said, it being free of charge may be a bit unrealistic given all the planning needed to provide such service. Therefore, I partially agree.

Water nourishes humans and every other being on the planet. It is an extremely versatile matter. Not only is it used for basic drinking and cooking, it is essential to farms and crops. It is difficult to think of a modern process that would not require access to water. Such as, cleaning, cooling modern machinery or hygiene purposes. Additionally, such a necessary thing should not be given to some and others not for classist purposes. Water's importance can be easily compared to oxygen, one can not live without it. Therefore, it is a basic human right.

However, providing clean water may prove expensive. For instance, the cost of effectively running a water salination plant. Such establishments require heavy machinery that is costly in addition to all the employees needed to run a smooth operation. Evenmore, the infrastructure needed to make sure water comes out of very tap does not build itself. Oncemore, we have to consider blue-collar workers. That being said, it should not be priced at a point that is unattainable, but spread out at a low cost over a huge population.

In conclusion, the human race would be extinct without access to clean water. However, it is not an area that governments or corporations should aim to profit from.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by presenting a clear position and supporting it with relevant arguments regarding both the human right to water and the economic realities of infrastructure. Your position is consistent throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas could be more thorough. For instance, while you mention the cost of 'water salination plants', you could further explore how governments might subsidize these costs to balance the 'human right' aspect with economic sustainability. The conclusion is a bit brief and could have better synthesized your main points to provide a more comprehensive final thought. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the question.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'That being said', 'Additionally', and 'However' to transition between ideas. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the argument for the right to water from the counter-argument regarding costs. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. For example, 'Oncemore' is not standard usage and 'Evenmore' is better expressed as 'Furthermore'. Improving the sophistication of your linking phrases would elevate the coherence of your writing to a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'versatile', 'infrastructure', and 'unattainable' appropriately. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'water salination' (should be 'desalination') and 'very tap' (should be 'every tap'). You also use some informal phrasing like 'does not build itself'. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and avoiding slightly repetitive structures. Overall, your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly and effectively throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'one can not live' (should be 'cannot') and 'Such as, cleaning...' which is a sentence fragment. Additionally, 'Evenmore' and 'Oncemore' are not standard English words. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more varied complex sentence structures and ensure that your punctuation, particularly with introductory phrases, is consistently accurate.
