Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, which negatively impacts the task achievement score. Furthermore, the essay does not clearly address the specific prompt regarding whether water should be 'free of charge'. Instead, it discusses the general importance of clean water. The arguments are repetitive and lack depth, particularly in the second body paragraph where the term 'cheap people' is used inappropriately to refer to low-income individuals. The position is not consistently maintained, and the ideas are under-developed, failing to provide a balanced or logical argument regarding the economic implications of free water supply.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay uses basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'In addition', and 'On the other hand', but these are often used mechanically. The paragraphing is present, but the logical progression of ideas is weak. The transition between sentences is often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the argument. For example, the shift from discussing the advantages of clean water to the disadvantages is abrupt and lacks a clear logical link. Referencing is also problematic, as the pronoun 'its' is frequently used incorrectly, leading to confusion regarding the subject of the sentences.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often inaccurate. The student relies on repetitive phrasing, such as 'access to clean water is a basic human right', which is repeated throughout the text. The use of 'cheap people' to describe those with low income is a significant collocation error and is inappropriate in an academic context. Other word choices, such as 'effect' instead of 'affect' and 'involves' instead of 'avoid', demonstrate a lack of precision. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to express complex ideas, and the errors occasionally impede the reader's understanding.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that affect clarity. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'dirty water effect the health'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are simple or contain errors in complex structures, such as 'if human can drink clean water so it cannot get any diseases'. Punctuation is generally functional, but the overall control of grammar is weak. The frequency of errors is high, and while the meaning is usually discernible, the lack of accuracy in basic sentence construction prevents a higher score.
