Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is the necessity of our lives and should be accessible to everyone. Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore, I strongly believe that every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.

Water is the most valuable component of our daily lives. What I mean by this is that we use water in almost all of our everyday tasks for instance, preparation of food, washing clothes and so on. For these tasks clean water is required and if clean water is not available for these activities then it could lead to some serious extent of damage to our health and even cause harmful diseases in certain cases. Every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge by the government and it’s a non-negotiable. Government collects a serious amount of taxes from the public and therefore should provide every house with clean water supply without any charge.

However, access to clean water is a hassle in countries like India, Pakistan, Bangladesh. The main reason behind the lack of access to clean water is that the population of these countries is increasing day by day and resources are limited. Corruption is also a major concern in these countries. Government cannot provide clean water to every household in these nations because population density is very high and political leaders are corrupt. While, I strongly believe that steps can still be taken by govt. in order to provide access to clean water in these nations.

Ultimately, access to clean water is a non-negotiable and should be provided to every home in the world without any charge because it’s a basic human right and it mustn’t be ignored.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, clearly stating a position in favor of free water supply. The ideas are relevant, such as the necessity of water for hygiene and the role of government taxation. However, the development is somewhat uneven. The second paragraph introduces the challenges in specific countries like India and Pakistan, but this section feels slightly disconnected from the main argument about the universal right to water. To improve, ensure that every point directly supports your central thesis rather than shifting into a descriptive analysis of specific nations' problems. The conclusion is clear, but the overall depth of the argument could be enhanced by exploring the economic implications of 'free' water more thoroughly.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Therefore', 'However', and 'Ultimately', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother to better link the theoretical argument with the practical examples provided. Additionally, the use of referencing is generally clear, though the flow within the second paragraph is slightly hindered by the listing of tasks. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical, but more sophisticated linking words would elevate the coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is some attempt to use topic-specific language like 'population density' and 'non-negotiable'. However, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a reliance on simpler phrasing (e.g., 'serious amount', 'serious extent of damage'). To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more precise academic collocations and less common vocabulary. For example, instead of 'serious amount of taxes', consider 'substantial tax revenue'. The word choice is generally accurate, but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips and punctuation issues. For example, 'What I mean by this is that we use water in almost all of our everyday tasks for instance, preparation of food...' lacks proper punctuation around the parenthetical phrase. There are also minor errors in article usage and informal abbreviations like 'govt.' which should be avoided in an academic essay. While the errors do not impede communication, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the control over punctuation needs refinement.
