Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 178 words. This significantly impacts the development of ideas. While the student expresses a clear position in favor of free water, the arguments are repetitive and lack the depth required for an academic essay. The points regarding health and poverty are mentioned but not sufficiently expanded or supported with logical evidence. The response lacks a formal structure, such as an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, which prevents a full exploration of the topic. To improve, the student must provide more detailed explanations and examples to meet the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.0
The essay lacks paragraphing, which makes it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. There is a lack of cohesive devices; the text relies heavily on repetitive sentence structures starting with 'Peoples' or 'Because'. The logical flow is disjointed, as the transition between the health benefits of water and the economic argument for free supply is abrupt. To improve, the student should organize ideas into distinct paragraphs and use a wider range of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to connect sentences and ideas more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The vocabulary is very limited and repetitive. Basic errors in word choice and spelling are frequent, such as 'oppitunity' for 'opportunity', 'deaseas' for 'diseases', and 'envirement' for 'environment'. The student uses simple, informal language that is not appropriate for an academic task. There is little evidence of the ability to use less common lexical items or precise collocations. To improve, the student needs to expand their vocabulary related to social issues and health, and focus on accurate spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The grammar is characterized by frequent, systematic errors that often impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'every people drink'), article usage, and sentence structure. The response consists almost entirely of simple sentences, with no evidence of complex grammatical structures. Punctuation is also problematic, with many sentences lacking proper structure. The misuse of basic verb tenses and word forms (e.g., 'humans died' instead of 'humans die') makes the text difficult to read. A focus on basic sentence construction and proofreading for grammatical accuracy is essential.
