Student answer (Band 6.0)

Water is the basic need for existence of humans and it is the right of every household to have water supply which is provided free of charge. I firmly believe in this statement that every individual should have access to water without any discrimination.

Water plays a vital role in human survival, and without it, no organism can exist. It is essential for agriculture, plant growth, and production of processed goods. Water makes up a significant proportion of the human body. Although human body can survive without food for a period of time, it cannot survive prolonged dehydration. For example, some regions of Africa experience severe water shortages because of harsh climates and limited rainfall. As a result, agricultural production becomes difficult, and communities may struggle to maintain adequate food supplies. Consequently, food shortages and malnutrition can become serious problems in these communities. Therefore, governments should have a responsibility to ensure that every household has access to an adequate water supply free of charge.

In addition to the countries who suffer from water scarcity and they have no natural water resources, there are some countries who use reverse osmosis process and consume sea water for their daily domestic needs. As a result, they charge their citizens for that water supply which is somewhat justifiable because the reverse osmosis is itself very expensive process. Hoewever, authorities should still take steps to provide their people with this basic need with minimum cost.

To conclude this, I strongly believe that every household should have access to free or highly affordable water because it is essential for human survival.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed the prompt clearly and maintained a consistent position throughout the essay. You provided relevant arguments regarding the necessity of water for survival and the economic challenges of desalination. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that governments should provide free water, you do not fully explore the potential economic consequences or the feasibility of such a policy in developing versus developed nations. To reach a higher band, you should expand on the 'why' and 'how' of your arguments, perhaps by discussing the balance between public welfare and fiscal responsibility in more detail.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'In addition to', 'As a result', and 'Consequently' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the sentence structure in the third paragraph ('In addition to the countries who suffer... and they have no...') is slightly clunky, which impacts the overall cohesion of that section. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. You use topic-specific terms like 'reverse osmosis', 'dehydration', and 'malnutrition' effectively. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'production of processed goods' or 'consume sea water', which could be more precise. While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there is a slight lack of flexibility in your phrasing. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated collocations and idiomatic expressions to enhance the natural flow of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are some grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('the' basic need, 'the' reverse osmosis) and minor punctuation slips like the typo 'Hoewever'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Your control over complex structures is generally good, but you should aim for more error-free sentences to demonstrate greater mastery. Focusing on article usage and subject-verb agreement will help elevate your accuracy.
