Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary era, water supply has become a topic of considerable debate. Water is the basic essential for every human being and it is also a human right to have clean water for their use, water management should be free to every house of country. While I believe that the supply of water provides a free basic quantity and then charge for extra consumption. This essay discusses both the viewpoints before presenting a valid perspective.

Commencing with the viewpoint of the multitude of people why they believe that water should be free of charge. The first and foremost reason is that it reduces the financial burden of poor families. To put it more simply, the underprivileged persons face less struggle for fresh water. Moreover, it is not only helps in provide clean water but also improve public health and reduce diseases caused by contaminated water. For instance, in rural area of Rajasthan, mostly people become unwell because of safe and unfiltered water. As a result, they have to pay heavy amount for certain quantity of water.

On the other hand, completely free water is not a good idea. This is mainly because water purifying, pipelines, storage and other maintenance are expensive. If water supply free, it will be create stress on government to balance their expenses. Apart from that, the wastage of water may be increases and the importance of water decrease, as clean water available everywhere and free. It harms to natural water resources.

In conclusion, although citizens should have access to clean water, I firmly believe that it should be free for certain amount for providing an unlimited water supply free of charge could leads to wastage and place a heavy financial burden on national authority.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that water should be partially free. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, such as the discussion on financial burdens and the risk of wastage. However, the development is slightly uneven; the example regarding Rajasthan is a bit vague, and the argument could be strengthened with more precise reasoning regarding how a 'tiered' system would function. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay, meeting the requirements for a Band 6.5 or 7.0, but it falls slightly short of the depth required for a higher band due to some minor over-generalizations.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices are present, such as 'Commencing with,' 'Moreover,' and 'On the other hand,' which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are occasional issues with referencing and flow, such as the awkward phrasing in the introduction regarding the 'valid perspective.' The progression of ideas is clear, but the cohesion could be more fluid to reach a higher band.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'contemporary era' and 'underprivileged,' which is positive. However, there are several instances of imprecise word choice and collocation errors, such as 'water management should be free to every house of country' instead of 'water supply should be provided free to every household in the country,' and 'it will be create stress' which is grammatically incorrect. These errors do not impede communication but limit the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and articles, such as 'it is not only helps in provide' (should be 'it not only helps to provide') and 'mostly people become unwell' (should be 'most people'). There are also issues with subject-verb agreement and missing prepositions. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band, as the control over complex structures is not yet consistent.
