Student answer (Band 7.0)
It is argued that everyone should have an accessible and free water supply in their homes, as it is considered a universal human right. I fully agree with this statement because water is essential for maintaining health, providing hydration, and enabling people to uphold proper hygiene.
First of all, water provides vital hydration, which is one of the most important factors for functioning in daily life. According to the World Health Organization, adults are advised to consume around eight glasses of water a day. Not only does this satisfy our thirst, but adequate hydration also offers numerous health benefits. For instance, maintaining
the right level of hydration supports concentration, improves skin elasticity, and can even enhance life expectancy.
In addition, water is indispensable for maintaining basic hygiene. Bathing is crucial because cleanliness and body odour influence social interaction. Moreover, maintaining a hygienic body helps prevent various skin diseases. This underscores why water should be affordable and easily accessible, especially in hot-weather regions. For example, people in tropical countries often need to bathe more frequently, as sunny weather causes the body to produce more sweat. However, in some regions, such as parts of Africa, communities face challenges in access clean water due to inadequate infrastructure. This shortage can lead to the widespread transmission of hygiene-related illnesses.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that people should have free and accessible water supplies, water is fundamental to health because it ensures proper hydration and enables individuals to maintain cleanliness, both of which are essential for overall well-being.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly, maintaining a consistent position throughout. You have identified the core arguments for why water should be free, focusing on health and hygiene. However, the task asks you to agree or disagree with the notion that it should be 'provided free of charge'. While you support the 'human right' aspect well, the essay lacks a counter-argument or a discussion of the economic implications of 'free' services, which would have provided a more balanced and fully developed response. To reach a higher band, ensure you explore the implications of your stance more deeply, perhaps by briefly addressing how such a system could be funded or managed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, such as hydration or hygiene, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use cohesive devices like 'First of all', 'In addition', and 'Moreover' effectively to link ideas. However, the transition between the discussion of hygiene and the mention of Africa feels slightly abrupt. Additionally, the final sentence of the conclusion is a run-on sentence that could be improved by using a semicolon or splitting it into two distinct thoughts to enhance the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'indispensable for maintaining basic hygiene', 'widespread transmission', and 'uphold proper hygiene' are used accurately. There is some repetition of the word 'water' and 'hydration', which is expected given the topic, but you could vary your vocabulary by using terms like 'aquatic resources', 'potable water', or 'vital fluid'. The word choice is generally precise, and there are no spelling errors that impede communication. To move to a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common lexical items.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There is a minor error in the phrase 'access clean water', which should be 'access to clean water'. Additionally, the final sentence in the conclusion is a comma splice, where two independent clauses are joined only by a comma. Despite these minor slips, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is always clear. To improve, focus on ensuring that complex sentences are punctuated correctly to avoid run-on structures.
