Student answer (Band 6.5)
Availability of clean water is a basic human right and a requirement for survival. Every home has an equal right to clean water supply and therefore water should be provided to each home free of fare. I agree with this statement as initiating this can have numerous advantages. I will discuss two of the main pros of this which include improved public health, and increased equity.
Firstly, making access to clean water available for everyone will minimize waterborne diseases. Waterborne diseases are the type of diseases that are transmitted by drinking unpurified water. Even today, many rural areas do not have the facility of clean drinking water, or sometimes, water at all. What they do is purify water from rivers by themselves but as it is not very effective, they are more prone to waterborne diseases. Having a clean water supply for everyone will reduce the risks of such diseases.
Moreover, this idea promotes social equity. When the water supply is made free of cost, the financial burden on middle class families or families with low income would be reduced. They would not need to worry about the expenses on water which is a basic necessity. This would lower poverty numbers as there are several homes that struggle for essential utilities.
Furthermore, I believe where there is water, there is life. Isn't this why we are looking for life on the planets that have the potential of holding water. We are trying to solve outer space problems, but we forget about the problems on our own planet that water is not free and available for everyone.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly, taking a firm position in favor of free water supply. The main ideas—public health and social equity—are relevant and logically linked to the prompt. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding poverty could be strengthened by explaining how the saved income might be reallocated, rather than just stating it lowers poverty numbers. The final paragraph introduces a philosophical point about space exploration that feels slightly tangential and less focused on the practical economic or social implications of the policy. Overall, the response covers the requirements well, but could benefit from more detailed supporting evidence or examples to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are used appropriately to signal the transition between points. However, the use of referencing is occasionally mechanical, and the connection between the final paragraph and the preceding arguments is somewhat abrupt. The paragraphing is sufficient, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the writer's position throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some instances of slightly unnatural phrasing, such as 'free of fare' (should be 'free of charge') and 'poverty numbers' (which could be more precisely phrased as 'poverty rates'). The writer attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'waterborne diseases' and 'essential utilities', which is positive. To improve, the writer should focus on more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. The range is sufficient for the task, but lacks the sophistication or variety required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is consistently clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the type of diseases that are transmitted' (which is wordy) and 'the problems on our own planet that water is not free' (which is syntactically awkward). Punctuation is generally correct, though the use of a question mark in the final paragraph is slightly informal for an academic essay. The majority of sentences are error-free, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the errors present do not impede communication.
