Student answer (Band 6.0)

Access to clean water is essential for human survival, and many people believe that every household should receive a free water supply. I agree that everyone should have access to safe drinking water, but I do not believe that providing unlimited water free of charge is the best solution.

First of all, clean water is necessary for having a good health and a dignified life. We have to drink clean water to survive. Most of our organs need clean water to work efficiently. Without clean water, we may not survive and may die.

We need clean water for cooking so that the food we eat is healthy and safe for us.

Dirty water is the cause of many diseases such as diarrhea and abdominal pain, and sometimes the substances in dirty water, such as sand, are the cause of kidney stones. In Pakistan's rural areas, a lot of children die from drinking dirty and harmful water because they don't have clean water to drink.

However, it shouldn't be free. Water is a great blessing, and if it were free, people would not value it. They will waste it because they know they aren't paying for it and become irresponsible; it's human nature that they don't value something untill its gone.

So, if we use and extent amount of water for purposes where it is not necessary or waste it without any reason, it will cause water scarcity.

So, there should be a wage on clean water. It's essential for life, but excessive use of it will cause many problems.

In conclusion, I think clean water is a basic right for everyone, but it should not be free so people will not forget its importance.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have addressed all parts of the task by clearly stating your position and providing reasons for both sides of the argument. You acknowledge the importance of clean water as a human right while providing a logical counter-argument regarding the necessity of pricing to prevent waste. The ideas are relevant and generally well-developed, particularly the point about water scarcity and human behavior. To reach a higher band, ensure that your supporting examples are more fully extended; for instance, the mention of Pakistan is a good start, but you could briefly explain how a tiered pricing system might balance affordability with conservation to further strengthen your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'First of all', 'However', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, the progression between some sentences feels slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more sophisticated. For example, the short, choppy sentences in the second paragraph ('We have to drink clean water to survive. Most of our organs need clean water to work efficiently.') could be combined using relative clauses or conjunctions to improve the flow and demonstrate better control over cohesive links.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'dignified life', 'water scarcity', and 'irresponsible'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'extent amount' (intended: 'excessive amount') and 'wage on clean water' (intended: 'charge for clean water'). Additionally, the phrase 'having a good health' is slightly unnatural; 'maintaining good health' would be more precise. While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'untill its gone' (spelling and possessive error: 'until it is gone') and 'the substances in dirty water... are the cause of kidney stones' (which is grammatically correct but could be more concisely phrased). You have good control over basic structures, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for more variety in complex sentence forms, such as using conditional structures or passive voice more effectively to discuss the policy implications of water pricing.
