Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position in favor of free water supply. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument. While the ideas are relevant, they are under-developed. For instance, the mention of 'taxes' is a good point but is not expanded upon to explain the economic feasibility or the broader implications of such a policy. The response lacks a nuanced discussion of the counter-arguments or the practical challenges of universal free water, resulting in a somewhat simplistic treatment of the topic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay uses basic paragraphing and some cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'secondly', and 'To conclude'. However, the flow is often disjointed due to short, repetitive sentence structures. The use of referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between ideas is mechanical rather than fluid. For example, the jump from discussing water quality to government taxes lacks a smooth logical bridge. The overall organization is present, but the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices makes the progression feel somewhat stilted.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary is limited and repetitive, relying on basic terms like 'water', 'people', and 'government'. There are several errors in word formation and collocation, such as 'improvent' instead of 'improvement', 'bying' instead of 'buying', and 'desease' instead of 'diseases'. The range is insufficient to demonstrate precision or flexibility. To improve, the student needs to incorporate more academic vocabulary related to public policy, infrastructure, and socio-economic concepts rather than repeating simple phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('the government'), incorrect verb forms ('water is supply'), and punctuation issues (missing spaces after periods). Complex structures are largely absent or attempted with errors, such as 'In some areas it is not possible to extract from from under land.' These errors are frequent and occasionally make the reader work harder to understand the intended meaning, which is characteristic of the Band 5 level.
