Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion on the provision of free water. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum, which limits the depth of the argument. While you touch upon the importance of water and distinguish between domestic and commercial use, the ideas are not fully extended. To improve, you need to provide more detailed supporting arguments and examples to meet the length requirement. The position is clear, but the lack of development prevents a higher score. Ensure you expand on your reasoning for why water should be free for households specifically, perhaps by discussing the socio-economic impact on low-income families.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical flow is somewhat disjointed. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is abrupt. While you use some cohesive devices like 'nevertheless' and 'however', the overall structure lacks a strong, cohesive argument. The sentences within paragraphs are sometimes loosely connected, making the progression of ideas feel mechanical. To improve, focus on using a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence that directly supports your main thesis. Better signposting would help the reader follow your argument more effectively.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your meaning, such as 'physiological needs', 'natural asset', and 'unjustifiable'. However, there are several inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'water supple' (supply) and 'write to use' (right to use). Some phrasing is repetitive, and the vocabulary lacks the sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to social issues and environmental resources. Avoid basic errors like 'write' instead of 'right' and ensure you proofread for spelling mistakes, as these detract from the overall quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include 'people have deprived' (should be passive: 'have been deprived') and 'the water supple of those areas controlled' (missing verb: 'is controlled'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing capital letters at the start of sentences. To improve, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice. Practicing complex sentence construction while ensuring grammatical accuracy will help you move toward a higher band.
