Student answer (Band 6.0)
Access to clean water is a fundamental human right, and therefore some people believe that every household should receive a free water supply. I strongly agree with this view because clean water resources for good you health and can also reduce social inequality.
To commence with, the main reason why water should be provided free of charge is that it is essential for human survival and hygiene. people need clean water for drinking, cooking, bathing and other basic activities. If poor families cannot for the sufficient water supply, they may have to depend on unsafe sources, which can cause serious health problems. Therefore, governments should ensure that every citizen has access to a basic amount of safe and clean water, regardless of their financial situation.
Furthermore, another important reason is that free water can help reduce the financial pressure on low income families. Many disadvantaged households already struggle to pay for necessities such as food, healthcare and education. Providing a basic amount of water free of charge would allow them to spend their limited income on these other essential needs. However, governments could charge people for excessive consumption to prevent and unnecessary wastage and encourage responsible use of this limited resource.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that every household should be provided with a basic free water supply because clean water is necessary for health and survival and can support poorer families. Nevertheless, excessive usage should be charged for in order to prevent wastage.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt clearly and maintains a consistent position throughout. The ideas regarding health benefits and financial relief are relevant and well-supported. However, the response is 244 words long, failing to meet the 250-word minimum requirement. This under-length impacts the development of the argument, as the conclusion and body paragraphs could have been more thoroughly expanded to reach the target length. While the position is clear and the main points are relevant, the failure to meet the minimum word count necessitates a penalty in this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To commence with', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central theme. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the necessity of water for health to the economic implications for low-income families. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally appropriate for the task, with some good collocations such as 'fundamental human right', 'financial pressure', and 'excessive consumption'. There are a few minor errors, such as 'good you health' (likely a typo for 'good health') and 'cannot for the sufficient' (should be 'cannot afford'). While the range is adequate to convey the intended meaning, it lacks the sophistication or variety of less common lexical items that would be required for a higher band score. The vocabulary is sufficient but remains somewhat standard.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is generally good control over grammar, though some errors persist, such as 'prevent and unnecessary wastage' (should be 'prevent unnecessary wastage'). Punctuation is mostly accurate, although there are some minor spacing issues. The grammatical errors do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To improve, the student should aim for a wider variety of complex structures and ensure greater precision in sentence construction to minimize these occasional slips.
