Student answer (Band 6.0)

It’s a well known fact that seas and oceans cover the most part of the Earth’s

surface. That’s why you can believe that water is an unlimited resource. The

problem is that only fresh water can be used for drinking, cooking and other

domestic needs.

Here the question about the availability of portab water arises. Let us consider the

issues connected with free access to clean water for every person and households.

The access to clean water and sanitation is recognized as a basic human right that

means that all of us can have safe and affordable water. Still, the lack of fresh

water is reality for millions of people and it’s clear that consuming dirty or infected

water can cause the spread of deseases and leads to the lowest living standards.

I don’t doubt that geographical and climatic peculiarities can be the reasons for the

mentione problems. On the other hand, there are examples of countries such as

Israel, Malta and other which resolved the problems and supply the population with

water meeting drinking standards. In my opinion, it depends much on the level of

economical, technological development of countries and the state policy.

Another important aspect is water usage for essential household purposes

such a washing, gardening, heating and etc. Here we should remember about the

importance of a wise approach to consuming this resource. People have to find the

balance between their domestic needs and inventing the ways to reduce waste of

water.

In this regard, I consider that accessibility of clean water at reasonable price can

optimize its use and minimize the negative impact on the environment because

consumers should be aware that water is valuable and scarce resource.

To summarise, I am convinced that water supply today poses a serious challenge for

megapolises as well as countyside. Therefore, the efforts of the government should

be directed towards the technological advances in the mechanisms that encourage

the population to save water whenever possible.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the human right to water and the feasibility of free supply. You clearly state your position that while water is a right, it should be priced reasonably to encourage conservation rather than provided entirely free of charge. You provide relevant examples, such as Israel and Malta, to support your argument regarding technological and economic factors. However, the development of your ideas could be more balanced; the argument against 'free' water is somewhat brief compared to the introduction. To improve, ensure you explicitly link your conclusion back to the prompt's specific claim about 'every home' having a 'free' supply to ensure a more comprehensive response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In this regard', and 'To summarise' to guide the reader through your argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as in the phrase 'the mentione problems' (referring to the previous paragraph). Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the introduction, body arguments, and conclusion. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensuring that the logical flow between sentences is more seamless and less reliant on simple connectors.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'portab water' (spelling error: potable), 'geographical and climatic peculiarities', and 'technological advances'. There are some spelling errors ('deseases', 'mentione', 'countyside') and minor collocation issues, such as 'economical development' (should be 'economic development'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. To improve, focus on mastering the spelling of academic terms and refining your word choices to sound more natural and precise in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'the question about the availability... arises' (missing article), 'such a washing' (should be 'such as'), and 'the level of economical, technological development' (missing 'and'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage and prepositions. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences by varying your sentence construction will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
