Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is an undeniable fact that being able to get potable water is one of the basic necessities in our daily life. Therefore, it is a valid argument that every household should be provided free water supply. I totally agree with this statement and the impeding essay will discuss over the reasons about why it is crucial for people to have free access of domestic water supply.

To begin with, water is a non-negotiable resource in our life because it is used in every aspect of life including our survival. One of the main reasons is that the under-privileged people are devoid of obtaining clean water even after paying a hefty amount for it in many countries. Even some developing countries are still struggling to provide potable drinking water to their citizens. Moreover, those countries are focusing on building infrastructure rather than providing basic living supplies such as water.

If we look into the other side of the matter, some countries do not have their own water storage and therefore, they need to import water from their neighbouring countries. For example, Dubai is a growing country and is richer than any other developing ones, however, it doesn’t have its own water reserve. Thus, water is expensive than oil there. Even though, its citizens have a free supply of water in their homes and no amount of tax is required for it.

Thus, after a brief discussion on the topic I have come to a conclusion that indeed free water supply is necessary for every house in the world because it is a valuable resource and most basic need of life.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that water is a basic necessity, the arguments regarding infrastructure and the example of Dubai are not fully connected to the core argument of whether it should be 'free of charge' for everyone. The essay touches on the topic but lacks the depth required for a higher band, as the reasoning remains quite general. To improve, ensure that each paragraph directly supports your thesis with more detailed explanations or logical consequences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Thus', which help the reader follow your argument. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The concluding sentence is a bit repetitive of the introduction. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that the relationship between sentences is more sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'potable', 'non-negotiable', and 'under-privileged'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'impeding essay' (likely meant 'impending' or 'following'), 'discuss over the reasons', and 'access of domestic water'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To improve, focus on learning common collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct grammatical context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'water is expensive than oil' (should be 'more expensive than'), 'the other side of the matter' (should be 'the other side of the argument'), and 'no amount of tax is required for it' (which is slightly awkward). While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To improve, focus on comparative structures and preposition usage.
