Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is the right of every individual to get clean water. However i believe that free water to some extent should be provided; conversely, if utilization not kept in check can lead to wastage so some amount should be allocated after a certain level of water usage.

It is necessary that every household gets access to clean water. The government should implements strategies and infrastructure so that clean water reaches each individual. Furthermore this water should also be provided in way so that those who use plenty of water on daily basis or waste a lot of water could be charged after a certain level of usage. In Islamabad rain water is also stored and filtered by filtering plants and through tall tanks provided to each block as the city faces water shortage the water used in homes is also charged so that people only use for necessary purpose and do not waste.

However, There are many people who cannot afford to pay for clean water. For these the government should make exception and the amount charged should be reduced to what it is charged to elite class. Additionally, there are many areas that require proper sewerage systems and access to clean drinking water. It is a basic need as water is used for food cleaning, drinking also for personal hygiene. So law makers should come forward and maintain this precious gift of life. One example is that in the Africa many individuals travel long way just to get clean water.

In conclusion, water should provided to every individual as it is a basic need. However, the government should also charge some amount to reduce water wastage plus to maintain infrastructure that provides water to homes.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a balanced position: agreeing that water is a right but arguing for a tiered pricing system to prevent wastage. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the water management system in Islamabad and the global issue of water scarcity in Africa. However, the development is somewhat uneven; while the position is clear, some arguments, particularly regarding the 'elite class' and 'sewerage systems,' could be more tightly linked to the core argument about free versus paid water. Overall, the response covers all parts of the task well and maintains a consistent stance throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'Furthermore,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, there are instances where the flow is slightly mechanical or the referencing is a bit loose, such as the transition between the discussion of Islamabad and the general need for infrastructure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body points, and conclusion. The progression of ideas is generally clear, though some sentences could be better connected to improve the overall flow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'infrastructure,' 'sewerage systems,' and 'utilization.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'provided in way' (should be 'provided in a way') and 'necessary purpose' (should be 'necessary purposes'). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band score. Spelling is generally accurate, though some phrasing is slightly unnatural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in the Africa'), subject-verb agreement ('government should implements'), and punctuation (missing commas after introductory phrases). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'if utilization not kept in check can lead to wastage.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. A greater variety of error-free complex structures would be needed to reach the next band.
