Student answer (Band 6.0)

Being human beings, as the residents of the Earth, everyone has the right to access water, but not necessarily free of charge. However, it is undeniable that clean water is not simply natural water and requires treatment for household purposes. Moreover, the waste of water resources has always been a huge issue that needs to be addressed globally. Hence, I argue that it is necessary to charge appropriate fees.

Every single year, the authority invests lots of funds to enhance and develop various water treatment companies to treat and supply water for individuals. A large number of staff members need to be paid, and machines require maintenance costs. If we start to implement free charge of water supply, which means the costs need to be covered by other means, such as individual income tax. Furthermore, the government may shorten the funds for other investment projects, like education and healthcare, which are significant for citizens.

from a family situation, there is plenty of water for daily life, such as cleaning clothes, cooking and showering. If the community does not need to pay for these expenses, it may lead to the waste of water resources . Additionally, a variety of manufacturers need water to be used on the production line. Therefore, I believe an appropriate charging policy is effective in managing human behaviour.

In summary, I sincerely appreciate that more and more people have the cognition of protecting water resources to avoid wasting them in recent years. Nevertheless, at present, I believe that charging for water is an essential way to promote water conservation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have clearly addressed the prompt by taking a firm position against free water supply. Your arguments regarding the costs of infrastructure and the necessity of pricing to prevent waste are relevant and well-developed. You have covered all parts of the task, providing a clear introduction, body paragraphs with supporting reasons, and a conclusion. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are more specific; for instance, instead of mentioning 'other investment projects' generally, you could briefly mention how a specific country manages water subsidies to strengthen your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'In summary' to link your thoughts. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the sentence structure within paragraphs could be more varied to improve flow. For example, the start of the third paragraph, 'from a family situation', is slightly awkward and would be better phrased as 'From a household perspective'. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and supports the logical development of your argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'infrastructure', 'maintenance costs', and 'water conservation' effectively. There are some instances of slightly unnatural collocations, such as 'implement free charge of water supply' (better: 'implement a free water supply policy') and 'cognition of protecting' (better: 'awareness of the need to protect'). While your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating more precise academic collocations would elevate your score. You avoid repetition and maintain a formal tone throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are recurring grammatical errors, such as 'Being human beings, as the residents of the Earth' (a dangling modifier) and 'free charge of water supply'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors, such as 'from a family situation' starting with a lowercase letter. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining complex sentence structures to ensure they are error-free.
