Student answer (Band 6.0)

Having access to clean and hygienic water is the fundamental right of every individual in today’s world. Therefore, supply of water must be provided to each home with free of cost. I completely agree to this assertion and the pertinent notions will be explained further.

Firstly, water is required for various purposes from drinking to washing clothes and for other household chores but the government charges for the water supply which is major problem for the poor people as they don’t have enough money to fulfill the essential needs of their families. Further, various activities managed by human involvement like providing water to the crops growing in the field are dependent on water. However, the waste produced by industries and factories is drained directly into the lakes which is a threat to the life of marine species and also leads to water pollution.

On the other hand, a revolutionary change is required for reducing the water pollution by constructing the proper drainage system for the treatment of the waste material before discharging into the rivers. Also, the government should take the initiative to provide hygienic and clean water for the people ,and the water-pipes must be installed in every society for supplying water in the areas who are deficient and have lack access to water. Every year, the head departments visit every local place and check the purity of water.

Although water is necessary for all the major activities, yet it is our responsibility to save water for the future generations.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of agreement regarding free water access for every home. The writer attempts to give reasons, stating that water is essential for daily household chores and noting the financial burdens faced by poor families. However, the development of ideas lacks focus in places. For instance, the second body paragraph veers into unrelated issues regarding industrial pollution and agricultural irrigation rather than fully supporting the core argument of whether water should be provided free of charge. While all parts of the task are touched upon, the arguments are somewhat under-developed and drift into environmental management rather than concentrating on the economic policy of free public utilities. This performance aligns best with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief concluding sentence. Cohesive devices are used to link sentences and ideas, such as 'Firstly,' 'Further,' and 'On the other hand.' However, paragraphing and referencing are sometimes faulty. The second body paragraph mixes multiple distinct themes—household needs, agricultural demands, and industrial pollution—without smooth transitional logic. Additionally, the relationship between sentences in the final paragraphs feels mechanical rather than naturally progressive. Despite these structural flaws, the progression is discernible throughout, making Band 6 the most accurate descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common phrases such as 'fundamental right,' 'assertion,' and 'revolutionary change.' However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the text. For example, writing 'with free of cost' instead of 'free of cost' and 'lack access to water' instead of 'a lack of access to water.' Furthermore, phrasing like 'head departments' is awkward and inaccurate in this context. While communication is not impeded, the frequent lexical slips prevent the response from achieving a higher band, placing it firmly at Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses such as 'Having access to clean and hygienic water is...' and 'Although water is necessary...'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, including 'supply of water must be provided to each home with free of cost' and 'areas who are deficient and have lack access to water.' Punctuation errors are also present, such as unnecessary spaces before commas. Nevertheless, the grammatical errors rarely impede overall communication, and a basic mixture of sentence structures is achieved, supporting a Band 5.5 score.
