Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by taking a clear stance agreeing with the statement that clean water should be free of charge. Main ideas are presented, such as basic human necessity, affordability for low-income populations, and government responsibility. However, the development of these ideas is limited and sometimes repetitive, leaning on generalisations rather than fully extended arguments or specific real-world examples. For instance, the discussion on poverty and water usage touches on relevant points but lacks depth. Consequently, the response aligns best with Band 6, where ideas are relevant and address all parts of the prompt, though some aspects are under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing an attempt at logical progression. However, paragraphing is somewhat erratic, with the introduction awkwardly integrated and some body paragraphs blending distinct thoughts. Cohesive devices and transitional phrases are frequently used, but many are awkward or non-standard (e.g., 'Embarking with the prominent benifit', 'To be more accurate'). Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of transitional phrases disrupts the flow. Overall, the organizational structure shows basic coherence but suffers from faulty cohesion, placing it securely at Band 5.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.0
The student uses a basic and limited vocabulary range appropriate for simple communication, but struggles significantly with word choice, spelling, and collocation. Numerous non-standard lexical choices and severe spelling errors appear throughout the text, such as 'acess' instead of access, 'benifit', 'formost', 'dring', 'defficency', 'poors', 'amoount', 'government' (spelled 'govrnment'), 'authourity', 'waterborn', 'deasesae', 'scenerion', 'desease', 'unpoure', and 'undoubtadely'. These frequent errors and the lack of less common vocabulary items restrict the lexical score to Band 4, as errors occasionally strain the reader.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.0
The essay exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and faulty attempts at complex clauses. Grammatical accuracy is extremely poor, featuring frequent errors in basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions (e.g., 'it is human right to acess of clean water', 'everyone have a water supply', 'water play very crucial role', 'people not survive before one week', 'if people not dring sufficient level of water they face dehydration'). These persistent errors frequently distort meaning and cause severe difficulty for the reader, placing the response at Band 4.
