Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating their strong agreement with the view that clean water should be provided free of charge to every home. The main ideas, such as preventing waterborne diseases and supporting basic hygiene, are relevant to the task and presented throughout the essay. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive in places. For instance, the discussion on hygiene and washing in the second body paragraph lacks precise extension and contains confusing logic regarding contaminated water spreading spores in the home. While a clear position is maintained, the support provided prevents the essay from reaching higher bands, aligning it closely with the Band 6 descriptor where relevant ideas are presented but some are under-developed or unclear.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a logical overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, along with identifiable body paragraphs. Cohesive devices are attempted using transitional phrases such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude that'. However, referencing is sometimes unclear, and some cohesive devices feel mechanical or are used awkwardly, such as 'Although Government should have primary responsibility...' which disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is present, but the internal cohesion within the second body paragraph suffers from disjointed sentences and unclear relationships between ideas. This level of cohesive control and logical progression corresponds well with a Band 6 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'microorganisms', 'hygiene', 'contaminated water', and 'waterborne diseases'. However, there are notable limitations and frequent errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation. Examples include 'without anycost', 'water born diseases', 'pay the negative impact', 'esstenial', and 'cleaning water' instead of 'clean water'. There are also awkward phrasings such as 'raise funds to take part the supply'. These lexical errors and limitations in precision restrict the response to a Band 5, as noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some variety in structure through clauses introduced by 'because', 'although', and 'which'. However, grammatical accuracy is weak, with frequent errors in articles, prepositions, subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Examples include 'the it is the basic right', 'drinking of such water causes... which can pay the negative impact', 'suffer a stomach problems', and 'water is an important for washing'. Punctuation is also problematic in places, such as the comma splice in 'Instead, of cleaning more spores are spreading'. These frequent errors frequently impede smooth reading, placing the grammar squarely at Band 5.
