Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position agreeing that water should be provided free of charge. The ideas presented attempt to explore both sides, as seen when the student briefly considers the argument about government funding and maintenance in the second body paragraph. However, the development of these ideas is quite limited and repetitive. For instance, the point regarding health benefits and the prevention of diseases like cholera is restated multiple times without sufficient extension or deep analysis. Similarly, the counterargument is underdeveloped, leading to superficial treatment of the prompt. While all parts are addressed to an extent, the lack of well-supported expansion places this within the Band 5 descriptor range.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The text demonstrates a basic organizational structure with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the overall progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and weak cohesive devices. Transitions such as 'Firstly,' 'Moreover,' 'Furthuremore,' and 'On the other side' are used, but their mechanical nature and frequent misuse disrupt the flow. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the pronoun use in 'thet get fund for renoveting the pips'. The logical relationship between sentences is frequently obscured by grammatical errors, which restricts the coherence to a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'electrolyte,' 'purification,' and 'renoveting,' but these are often marred by spelling and word-choice inaccuracies (e.g., 'water bond diseases' instead of 'water-borne diseases', 'text' instead of 'tax', 'pips' instead of 'pipes'). There is noticeable repetition of basic terms like 'water,' 'free,' and 'government' throughout the essay. These persistent errors in spelling and collocation can cause occasional difficulty for the reader, aligning with the Band 5 descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'Some people said that every individual need', 'if a parson drink infected water a individual become a sick', 'government proved it free of cost'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing capitalization at the beginning of clauses. Although the meaning can generally be deciphered, the high frequency of basic grammatical errors means that error-free sentences are rare, corresponding to a Band 4.5 or rounded to Band 5.
