Student answer (Band 6.0)
Access to clean water is considered a basic human right and some people believe that every household should recieve a water supply free of cost. In this period of modernity, many people depend on a regular supply of clean water for their daily lives. In my opinion, I strongly agree with this notion because clean water is essential for human survival.
Supporting my agreement, I firmly believe that clean water is a basic necessity for every individual. People need water for drinking, cooking, washing and other household activities, so it should not be unavailable because of financial problems. To cite an example, poor families may strugle to payhigh water bills and may be forced to use unsafe sources of water. Moreover, providing free access to clean water can improve public health because people will be less likely to consume contaminated water. As a result, water-related diseases can be reduced and the overall quality of life can improve.
Explaining another supporting point in favour of this statement, it is true that providing a basic amount of free water can be considered a responsibility of the government. Every home should have enough water to meet essential daily needs, regardless of the family's income. For instance, governments can provide a limited amount of water free of charge while charging people for excessive consumption. In this way, basic needs can be fulfilled without encouraging unnecessary water wastage. Consequently, this system can provide support to disadvantaged people while also promoting responsible water use.
In conclusion, I strongly agree that every household should have access to a basic supply of clean water without charge. This is because water is essential for human life, and such a policy can protect poor families and improve public health.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, taking a clear and well-developed position that clean water is a basic human right and should be provided free of charge. The writer extends and supports ideas adequately, such as mentioning public health benefits and proposing a tiered pricing system where excessive consumption is charged. While the ideas are somewhat predictable, they are fully relevant and logically extended throughout the body paragraphs, fulfilling the requirements for Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and a generally smooth progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with an introduction that states the writer's position, followed by body paragraphs with supporting examples, and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'As a result', and 'Consequently' are used effectively to link ideas. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, keeping the essay coherent and easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 7 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The writer uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task with some flexibility and precision. Phrases such as 'basic human right', 'financial problems', 'contaminated water', and 'excessive consumption' demonstrate an adequate control of topic-related terminology. There are occasional spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'recieve' instead of 'receive' and 'strugle' instead of 'struggle'. However, these errors do not impede communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples of complex structures include 'People need water for drinking, cooking, washing and other household activities, so it should not be unavailable because of financial problems.' There are some minor errors in spelling and word form, but punctuation is generally well controlled and the majority of sentences are clear and error-free. The grammatical control shown is consistent with a Band 6 level.
