Student answer (Band 5.0)

Supply of clean water is human necessity so every household must have clean water supply that should be free of charge. I completely agree with this argument because water is essential to sustain life and everyone is heavily dependent on water for cleaning and many other purposes.

Firstly, free and clean water should be provided to everyone because of the enormous needs. Free water guarantees that low-class households and population of rural areas are not deprived of basic human need. Water is being used in my household chores like cleaning and cooking aside from just drinking so disruption in supply of water can create problems for everyone. We should replace clean water with sea water for many purposes other than human intake.

On the other hand, clean water protects us from many waterborne diseases and reduces the cost of health overall. It helps human body to survive and detox many diseases biologically. It is basic unit of life and keeps us healthy so we can work or study. It is also very important for the vegetables and crops. Although it should be provided to everyone yet ensuring the responsible use of water is also very crucial because wasting it unnecessarily can cause shortage of supply in the future.

In conclusion, clean water supply is a basic need of humanity and helps maintain life on planet Earth. Consequently, everyone should pay attention while using it and avoid wasting it, in order to preserve it for future.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position of complete agreement with the idea that clean water should be provided free of charge. The student provides some reasons, such as health benefits, human necessity, and the role of water in household chores. However, the task achievement is hindered in two main ways. Firstly, the response is 5 words under the 250-word minimum requirement, which must be penalized. Secondly, the ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on brief, repetitive statements rather than fully extended arguments. For instance, the mention of replacing clean water with seawater is tangential and not fully integrated. Because the essay touches upon all parts of the task but lacks sufficient development and falls short of the word count, it aligns best with Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay displays a basic overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. While the student attempts to sequence ideas using transition markers like 'Firstly' and 'On the other hand', the latter is used inappropriately because the second body paragraph does not actually present a contrasting viewpoint; instead, it continues to support the benefits of clean water. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, and logical progression between sentences is sometimes disjointed. Because the text has some organization but suffers from mechanical and occasionally inaccurate use of cohesive devices, it fits the Band 5.0 descriptors well.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing water supply and basic human rights, with terms such as 'human necessity', 'waterborne diseases', and 'detox'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'low-class households' instead of 'low-income households', and 'basic unit of life' instead of 'basic requirement of life'. Collocations are occasionally unnatural. Although the vocabulary allows the student to convey their core message, the frequency of word-choice errors and the lack of more sophisticated phrasing keep this criterion at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay features a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at varied structures through conditional and subordinate clauses (e.g., 'Although it should be provided to everyone yet...'). However, grammatical accuracy is weak. There are frequent missing articles, such as 'Supply of clean water is human necessity' (should be 'The supply... is a human necessity') and 'disruption in supply of water'. Additionally, there is a structural error with correlative conjunctions: 'Although... yet' are used together incorrectly in the third paragraph. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, placing the performance at a Band 5.0.
