IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.
Do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Clean water is essential for a healthy life. It is widely argued that it is a basic human right and should be provided to everyone for free. This essay will discuss why it should be supplied to every home for free. In my opinion, people should be provided with clean water free of charge. However, water should not be waste as well.
Paying for clean water would be difficult for everyone. Cost of living around the world is increasing sharply and paying for water would be an additional burden on normal households. People even struggle to pay the existing bills like gas, electricity and internet. That is why access to clean drinking water should be made available for free. For example, the majority of people in poor countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan struggle to afford basic life necessities but paying for water will make their lives even more difficult.
Water is not a scarce resource. It is available in abundunt amount around the world. Alhough it may be necessary in some regions to filter it but still it is available in vaste amount and government or companies should not sell water. It should be absolutely free especially for the lower middle class people as it is not a luxury or privilege rather a right and right should not be denied.
Despite the above reasons, we should be carefull in its use. Providing it free of charge may lead to unnecessary use by people which can cause a lot of water to be wasted. Besides this, Tech and AI companies may use it for free for cooling purposes in data centeres which can waste huge amount of water. Therefore, governments around the world should spread awareness among people regarding efficient use of water and make laws to minimise waste of clean drinking water.
In summary, water is a basic human right. It should be supplied to every home without any charges as water is present in abundance and everyone cannot pay for water bills. I believe that, every citizen should have access to clean water free of charge.
