Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.5

The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position in agreement with the statement that water should be provided free of charge, supporting it with reasons such as domestic needs and gardening. However, the task achievement is significantly undermined by two major issues. First, the essay is unfinished, cutting off mid-sentence in the conclusion ('perevent for any further illne'). Second, the response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, standing at only 208 words. Consequently, the ideas are under-developed and lack the necessary depth and extension expected for higher band scores. Due to the incomplete nature of the response and the failure to meet the length requirement, this criterion is awarded a band score of 4.5.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay exhibits some basic organizational structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief concluding attempt. However, the overall progression is disrupted by abrupt shifts in ideas, such as moving from domestic water usage directly to gardening and backyard plants in the third paragraph. Cohesive devices are used minimally and sometimes inappropriately, such as the awkward transition 'Other reason each home have extra space'. Paragraphing is attempted, but because the essay cuts off prematurely, the conclusion is incomplete and lacks proper cohesion. Referencing and logical sequencing are faulty at times, leading to a disjointed reading experience. Based on these descriptors, the coherence and cohesion fall into the Band 5 category.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and incorrect word forms. Examples include 'indiviuals' for individuals, 'obtaine' for obtain, 'utensiles' for utensils, 'fuild' for fluid, 'simuntalously' for simultaneously, 'vienyards' for vineyards, 'frutifull' for fruitful, 'enviroment' for environment, and 'strocks' for strokes. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts to use less common items result in noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. While the core message about water access is understandable, the lexical inaccuracies prevent the response from achieving a higher score. This performance aligns well with the Band 5 descriptors.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'Water is free gift from nature', 'the water is used in different ways', and 'an indiviuals should consume'. Punctuation errors are also present, notably unnecessary comma splices like 'therefore , I agree' and 'As well an indiviuals should consume atleast, 6-8 glasses'. Furthermore, the sentence structures in the body paragraphs often become convoluted or repetitive. Because errors are frequent and the essay ends abruptly due to an incomplete sentence, the grammatical accuracy and range reflect a Band 5 level.
