Student answer (Band 6.0)

All homes should have a water connection and it would be free of cost. It is a basic right of everyone to get clean water.

All the humans living in the world have equal rights and individuals should have access to clean water. Moreover all houses must have their own connection to water and the government should provide water free .

Clean water is an essential part of human life, and everyone should have access to it. I strongly agree that all homes should have a water connection and that clean water should be provided free of charge, particularly because it is a basic necessity.

Firstly, water is essential for human survival, and people cannot live without it. Therefore, everyone should have equal access to a safe and reliable water supply. Unfortunately, drinking contaminated water can cause serious health problems. For example, in Pakistan, diseases such as typhoid are common in areas where people consume polluted water. Providing clean water to households could therefore help reduce waterborne diseases and improve public health.

Moreover, low-income families may not be able to afford commercially bottled water. Companies such as Nestlé and Aqua sell bottled water, but purchasing it regularly can be expensive for people with limited incomes. For this reason, governments should ensure that every household has access to clean water through public water systems. They could also install water purification facilities and launch awareness campaigns to educate people about the importance of safe drinking water.

In conclusion, clean water is a fundamental human necessity. Governments should provide every household with access to safe water at little or no cost, ensuring that all people can meet this basic need regardless of their financial situation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The student addresses all parts of the task by clearly taking a stance in agreement with the prompt and supporting it with relevant arguments. The position is maintained throughout the response. Ideas are extended and supported, particularly in the body paragraphs where specific examples such as typhoid in Pakistan and the mention of companies like Nestle are used to illustrate the points. However, the introductory section suffers from noticeable redundancy, repeating the core premise multiple times across the first three paragraphs before settling into a more structured argument. Despite this repetitive start, the task is sufficiently addressed overall, earning a band score of 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction through the body paragraphs to the conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as health implications and economic factors. Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'In conclusion' are employed to guide the reader through the text, although the transition between the introductory repetitions and the first body paragraph feels slightly disjointed. Referencing is generally clear, and the logical flow is maintained throughout the main body of the essay, meeting the criteria for a band 6.5.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task. Words such as 'contaminated', 'public health', 'low-income families', and 'fundamental human necessity' show an ability to use less common lexical items with some awareness of collocation. There are some limitations and slight awkwardness in phrasing, particularly in the repetitive opening statements, but spelling and word choice are generally accurate and do not impede communication. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning effectively, aligning with a band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like conditional and relative clauses ('where people consume polluted water', 'that clean water should be provided'). There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles or slightly repetitive sentence patterns in the introduction, but these errors rarely impede communication. The majority of sentences in the body paragraphs are grammatically sound and show good control, justifying a band score of 6.5.
