Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 250 words, stopping abruptly at 199 words and leaving the final paragraph incomplete. Despite this significant limitation, the student manages to address both sides of the prompt to some extent, presenting arguments for why water should be provided free of charge, as well as briefly touching upon the counter-argument regarding water wastage before the text trails off. However, the position is somewhat contradictory initially, stating that the writer both 'equally agree and disagree'. Due to the under-length penalty and incomplete task development, the score is restricted to Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text suffers from a major structural flaw: it consists of only three paragraphs, with the final paragraph cut off mid-sentence due to the student running out of text. Furthermore, the entire introduction is written as a single, massive run-on sentence without proper punctuation or capitalization, containing multiple clauses linked by conjunctions. While some cohesive devices are attempted (such as 'To begin with', 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'On the other hand'), the lack of punctuation and sentence boundaries severely disrupts logical progression and readability. Paragraphing is inadequate, and referencing is often blurred by the continuous stream of words, placing this criterion at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited, repetitive vocabulary that is barely adequate for the task. Basic terms such as 'clean water', 'free of cost', 'poor people', and 'dirty water' are reiterated frequently. There are attempts at less common lexical items like 'filteration process' (which is also misspelled), but precise vocabulary choices are lacking. Word choice errors and spelling mistakes are noticeable, such as 'there house' instead of 'their house' and 'prople' instead of 'people'. These limitations restrict the lexical range and cause some strain for the reader, though the core meaning is generally retrievable, aligning with a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text is plagued by severe run-on sentence structures, most notably the opening sentence and the entire second paragraph, which string multiple independent clauses together using commas or conjunctions instead of full stops. There is a complete lack of standard punctuation and capitalization. While the student attempts a few complex structures, they are poorly controlled and frequently faulty. Frequent errors in punctuation, sentence boundaries, and basic agreements impede fluent reading and distract the reader significantly, justifying a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0.
