Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating their agreement with the idea that clean water is a human right and should be provided free of charge. A position is presented throughout the essay, and several related ideas are introduced, such as the necessity of water for household chores, agriculture, and industry. However, the development of these ideas is limited and somewhat repetitive, drifting occasionally into generalized statements about animals, plants, and insects rather than maintaining a tight focus on the economic and social arguments of free home water supplies. While the prompt is addressed, the overall exploration of the issue remains basic and lacks the well-extended support expected at higher bands. Therefore, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay displays some organizational structure, dividing ideas into multiple paragraphs, but overall progression is hindered by weak cohesion and repetitive phrasing. Transitional devices are sometimes misused or applied awkwardly, such as 'however' following a lower-case start in the first paragraph, and repetitive usage of phrases like 'On the other hand' which do not logically contrast the preceding paragraph. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph cohesion is frequently disrupted by abrupt shifts in topic, such as jumping from personal chores to agricultural needs. Referencing pronouns like 'them' are occasionally unclear. Overall, these cohesion and flow issues place the response at Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on fundamental words like 'water', 'clean', 'provide', and 'basic human right'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text, such as 'Access to get clean water', 'water is are basic need', and 'making food dinner or breakfast'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'agriculture land' and 'industrial area', word choice and spelling inaccuracies cause some difficulty for the reader at times. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, corresponding to a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The essay features a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences joined by coordinating conjunctions or punctuation errors. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to severe structural breakdowns, such as 'from my perspective providing clean water to all living things should be responsibility of government to provide clean water in every single house although , animals , birds , plants and insects .' Punctuation and capitalization are erratic throughout the text, and frequent errors in basic verb forms and articles impede readability. Consequently, the performance aligns best with the Band 4.0 descriptors.
