Student answer (Band 5.5)

One of the most significant human rights is access to clean water. I strongly agree with this statement as human requires water not only for drinking but also in every sphere of his life, for daily activities, cooking, cleaning etc.

Human life is implausible without water as existence of lifes on earth will become extinct without water. Besides, man cannot imagine his life without clean water. Water is required for almost all the activities. However, most of the water available is neither fresh water nor clean. The oceans cover almost two third of the earth that don't provide freshwater rather extremely salty water which can not be used in our daily activities. Besides, the water available in rivers and ponds is not pure and clean. Hence, we can not use the water from these sources directly. The water should be gone through purifying process so that it can be suitable for drinking or other uses.

Therefore, there can not be any better solution than providing a clean water supply service in every home. It is high time this measure was implemented so that access to clean water can be ensured for everyone. For an instance, the service of WASA can be mentioned which stands for Water Supply and Sewerage Authority. It is an authority in Bangladesh which acts for the water supply chain and water management in Bangladesh. One of its recent initiatives is to ensure clean water supply for each family living in Bangladesh which is indeed an incredible initiative.

Hence, to conclude it can be said that as human life is inimaginable without clean water, ensuring access to clean water is definitely a basic right of human that is required to implemented immediately for better life.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The student addresses the prompt by clearly stating their agreement with the idea that access to clean water is a basic human right and that homes should have a free water supply. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are generally relevant, discussing why clean water is essential, the lack of naturally fresh water, and giving an example of a water authority in Bangladesh. However, the student does not specifically address the financial aspect of the prompt—whether it should be 'provided free of charge'—which is a key component of the task. Consequently, the development is slightly limited and leads to an over-generalisation about water supply services. Despite this minor omission regarding the financial condition, the core argument is sufficiently covered, aligning well with the descriptors for Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance presented from the beginning. Paragraphing is utilised, separating the introduction, body paragraphs addressing water sources and solutions, and the conclusion. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes affected by repetitive phrasing and awkward transitions, such as starting multiple sentences with 'Besides' or 'Hence'. Cohesive devices are occasionally mechanical or inaccurate, and referencing is not always completely clear, as seen in the slightly disjointed flow between sentences in the second paragraph. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better management to achieve a higher score. Overall, the text meets the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range for the task, successfully attempting less common items and subject-specific terms such as 'purifying process', 'freshwater', and 'Sewerage Authority'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors throughout the response, such as 'human requires water' (instead of humans require), 'existence of lifes' (instead of life), 'implausible' (used incorrectly for impossible), and 'gone through purifying process' (instead of go through a purification process). Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'inimaginable', do occur but do not severely impede communication. These limitations place the lexical resource firmly at Band 5.5, which rounds to Band 6 given the attempt at less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structures, as seen in conditional-like ideas and subjunctive forms ('It is high time this measure was implemented'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement ('human requires', 'life of lifes'), missing articles ('the oceans cover almost two third'), and incorrect passive voice structures ('The water should be gone through'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors are frequent, they rarely impede the overall comprehension of the writer's message. This performance is characteristic of Band 5.5, meriting a Band 6.0.
