IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Access to clean water is a basic human right. Therefore every home should have a water supply that is provided free of charge.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Thesedays, the filter water becomes the need of everyone. As every person knows, water is becoming bad day by day. So families give priority to drink clean water. Some people believe that the connections of water supply should be free of cost in every household. I strongly agree with this idea and in this essay i will support this opinion with examples.

Firstly, the people who drink hygienic water remain healthy even if they become aged. In other words, they do not have any special diseases like sugar, cholestrol etc. For example, people who live in western countries, they look very young because they use spoteless water.

Secondly, low income families do not have too much funds to afford clean water. They have other expenses like school fees, fuel, gas etc. Governments should provide free water supply connection to their homes, so that they can drink sanitary water. For instance, the residents of gulf countaries get help from their administration regarding to clean water.

In contrast, However, making all water completely free could lead to excessive use. When people do not have to pay for something, they may be less careful about how much they consume. For example, some households might leave taps running or use large amounts of water for gardening and car washing. This could increase water shortages, particularly in countries that already have limited water resources. In addition, governments need money to maintain pipes, treatment plants, and other water infrastructure. If no one pays for water, the government would have to cover all these costs through taxes.

In my opinion, governments should guarantee every household a free or very cheap basic amount of clean water. However, people should pay for water that they use beyond this essential amount. This approach would protect people's basic right to clean water while also encouraging responsible consumption and helping governments maintain the water supply system.

While some of the linking phrases are slightly basic or repetitive, the overall structural flow is coherent and easy to follow, aligning closely with the Band 6 to 7 criteria.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'excessive use', and 'guarantee'. However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward collocations, such as 'filter water' instead of 'filtered water', 'bad day by day' instead of 'deteriorating day by day', 'spoteless water' instead of 'clean water', and 'countaries' which represents a spelling error. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and conditional structures successfully in places. However, frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are present, such as capitalization issues ('Thesedays', 'i'), missing articles ('drink hygienic water'), subject-verb agreement issues ('people who live in western countries, they look'), and punctuation errors like combining transitional phrases ('In contrast, However'). These errors mean the majority of sentences are not error-free, but they rarely impede overall communication, consistent with a Band 6 score.
