Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt by taking a clear position agreeing that clean water should be provided free of charge, and presents several supporting arguments relating to health benefits and affordability for poorer households. However, the development of these ideas is limited and at times repetitive, which places the response firmly in the Band 5 category. While the writer attempts to explain the advantages of government intervention, the supporting examples are somewhat vague and lack deeper elaboration. For instance, the mention of health issues is brief and underdeveloped, and the reasoning surrounding government limits on water usage is somewhat confused. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to extend their ideas more fully with robust explanations and concrete examples rather than relying on generalized statements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay displays a basic overall arrangement with clear paragraphing, including an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, and cohesive devices are used mechanically or inaccurately. Phrases like 'To commence with', 'Moving further to more advantages', and 'To add more' feel formulaic and repetitive. Furthermore, referencing is frequently unclear, as seen in sentences like 'in these kind of conditions it help them alot', where the pronoun antecedent is ambiguous. Punctuation errors, such as the space before the comma in 'So , at there', also detract from the cohesion. While the text is generally navigable, the lack of smooth transitions and flexible cohesive devices keeps the score at Band 5.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, representing a limited range that is minimally adequate for the task. Words such as 'benefits', 'issues', 'help', and 'people' are overused throughout the essay. There are also noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'enormous benefits', 'clear water' instead of 'clean water', 'establish water purifires' instead of 'install water purifiers', and 'government inbuilted pipelines'. Spelling errors like 'anormous' and 'purifires' occur, though they do not severely impede overall comprehension. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are often imprecise or grammatically incorrect. To improve, the writer should focus on expanding their lexical repertoire and learning precise collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic compound forms. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, characterized by missing subjects, run-on structures, and awkward phrasing, such as 'so if they drink polluted water, they can face more health issues which will affect their work.' There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('government started', 'everyone get benefit'), missing articles ('have a clean water'), and tense inconsistencies. Punctuation is also problematic in places. These frequent errors cause occasional difficulty for the reader, aligning the grammar with the Band 5 descriptors where frequent errors persist even in simpler structures.
