Student answer (Band 5.0)

In the society water is considered has basic need, so the availability of water to everyone as to be free. In my opinion i believe that the water is essential and has to be available for all without any charge.

Overall, everyone without an exception have needs to the water in their own ways of life like drinking, cooking, washing etc., so the water is considered as basic need for all. Our body is made up of water not only human body almost every living organism is made of water, while we drink water everyday, but the water is not free and we have to pay for using it, as we know the earth is covered with more than 80% of water but the useage of water is not free, in our society their are rich people who can affort and also poor who struggle for theit daily source of food and water, so the government should take into consideration and make water available for everone free of charge.

In contrast, the government can benefit by charging useage of water and which can improve the revenue but some people waste water for unnecessary things like during festivals we see a lot of water going waste because of people using it for washing and cleaning which is not necessary and also the rain water is going waste.

In conclision, all need water irrespectively, so the authorities should take some measures, in balance, that can benefit who are in need of water not the one who waste them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by stating a clear position that water should be provided free of charge to everyone. The main ideas are introduced, such as the essential nature of water for human survival and the socioeconomic disparity between the rich and the poor. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For instance, the argument regarding human and biological composition is stretched into a lengthy generalisation rather than being extended with robust supporting examples. Although all parts of the task are addressed, the reasoning tends to circle back to the same points rather than progressing logically through distinct arguments. This places the performance solidly within the Band 5 descriptors, where the task is addressed, but ideas remain under-developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into four paragraphs, showing an awareness of standard essay structure with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression within and between paragraphs is hindered by mechanical and faulty cohesive devices. Words like 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'In conclision' are used, but their connective function does not always match the logical relationship between the sentences. For instance, 'In contrast' introduces a counter-argument about government revenue and water wastage, but the transition feels abrupt. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally unclear, such as pronoun use in 'the authorities should take some measures, in balance, that can benefit who are in need of water not the one who waste them'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion requires better management.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used throughout the essay is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on fundamental terms like 'water', 'basic need', 'free', and 'people'. There are several noticeable word-choice and spelling errors that reflect a limited lexical range, such as 'useage' instead of usage, 'affort' instead of afford, and 'conclision' instead of conclusion. While the meaning remains mostly accessible, the lack of a wider range of vocabulary and precise collocations restricts the lexical score. The attempt to use less common items like 'socioeconomic' or 'disparity' is absent, keeping the language at a minimally adequate level for the task.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. Frequent errors occur, including run-on sentences and incorrect verb forms, such as 'In the society water is considered has basic need, so the availability of water to everyone as to be free' and 'everyone without an exception have needs to the water'. Punctuation is also problematic, with long comma-spliced sentences connecting disparate clauses without proper subordination or terminal punctuation. These errors require some effort from the reader to parse the intended meaning, which aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptor for grammar.
