Student answer (Band 6.0)
Having access to clean water is a basic human right, so each home should be provided a water supply for free. I strongly agree that access to clean water is very important for everyone to live a healthy life.
Many densely populated countries across the world are facing water shortage issues. People living in such areas even do not have enough clean water to drink and for their daily use. So the government's of these coutries should provide them clean water supply, so they can live a healthy life. For instance, in luxury societies clean water is readily available because they have proper supply of water, so authorities should take action and provide each home with a water supply.
Access to pure water can potentially reduce the risk of getting diseases, as most of them are caused by drinking dirty water. Due to this there will be a decline in the number of people being diseased and they would no have to spend extra money on their health care. The government's may charge a fee for this water supply annually but it should be low and easy to be paid by everyone. This would encourage peoe not to waste water and use it carefully. For instance, people do not value things that are free so that is why government should charge some money to make citizens responsible.
By providing ean water to everyone will also diminish the difference between rich and poor, as before only rich people were accessible to pure water.
In conclusion, everyone should have access to clean water as it is our fundamental right. This would be extremely beneficial for the whole population of the world and for the well being of humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses the prompt directly by taking a nuanced position. Although the prompt argues that water should be provided free of charge, the student agrees with clean water access as a right, yet introduces an interesting counter-argument in the third paragraph suggesting that a small annual fee should be charged to prevent wastage and encourage responsibility. This demonstrates a well-developed argument, extending beyond a simple 'yes' or 'no'. All parts of the task are covered with relevant examples, such as comparing luxury societies with water-scarce areas. The ideas are adequately supported and extended, positioning the response well within the Band 7 descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and overall progression from introduction, through body paragraphs tackling different aspects of the issue, to a definitive conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as health benefits versus the economic argument for charging a small fee. Cohesive devices are employed reasonably well, using words like 'For instance', 'Due to this', and 'In conclusion' to signal relationships between ideas. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, preventing a higher score. For example, the transition 'By providing ean water to everyone will also...' contains a typo and lacks smooth integration, but overall, cohesion is well managed.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using phrases like 'densely populated countries', 'water shortage issues', and 'fundamental right'. There are attempts at less common lexical items, although these are sometimes accompanied by inaccuracies in word choice or collocation. For instance, the phrase 'number of people being diseased' is awkward, and 'rich people were accessible to pure water' uses incorrect collocation ('pure water was accessible to rich people'). Spelling errors, such as 'government's' instead of 'governments', 'coutries' for 'countries', and 'peoe' for 'people', occur throughout the text, placing this response firmly in the Band 6 territory.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating conditional meanings and relative clauses effectively (e.g., 'As most of them are caused by drinking dirty water' and 'This would encourage people not to waste water'). There are, however, several grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, such as missing articles ('each home should be provided a water supply'), incorrect subject-verb agreement ('government's of these coutries'), and fragmented or awkward phrasing ('People living in such areas even do not have enough'). While these errors do not impede communication, they recur frequently enough to prevent the essay from reaching Band 7.
