Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the prompt by clearly stating a position agreeing with the idea that access to clean water is a basic right and should be provided free of charge. The writer supports this position with reasons related to domestic use, public health, and environmental cleanliness. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive, with frequent focus on cleaning surroundings and drilling boreholes. While the main stance is clear throughout, the support tends to over-generalise and lacks deeper elaboration. This level of task response corresponds to a Band 5.5, as the ideas are relevant and address all parts of the prompt, but remain under-developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, showing a clear attempt at a logical structure including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. However, the logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward referencing, repetitive points, and mechanical cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'In addition'. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion within paragraphs lacks smooth transitions. For example, sentences such as 'Which result in clean atmospher and serene environment' demonstrate faulty sentence linking and fragmented structures. Overall organisation is present, but progression is strained. This aligns with Band 5.0 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating topic-related words such as 'purified water', 'consumption', 'illness', and 'chlorine'. However, there are numerous spelling and word-choice errors that detract from the writing, including 'avaliale' instead of available, 'allot' instead of a lot, 'choleral' instead of cholera, 'sorroundings' instead of surroundings, 'suplus' instead of surplus, and 'assesibility' instead of accessibility. These noticeable errors and misspellings cause occasional difficulty for the reader and reflect a vocabulary profile characteristic of Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response exhibits a very limited range of grammatical structures. The writer attempts some complex sentences, but these are frequently faulty, such as 'reasons been that we use water' and 'Which result in clean atmospher'. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, article usage, and punctuation throughout the text. Simple sentences are generally more successful, but the high frequency of grammatical errors across both simple and complex structures impedes readability at times. This profile matches the Band 5.0 descriptors, where frequent errors cause difficulty and complex structures lack accuracy.
