Student answer (Band 5.0)

In recent years, the water supply to home is the most discussed topic. Some people believe that supply of water for free is advantage, however some people believe its disadvantage. I partially agree that supply of free charged water in every home is necessary.

On the one hand, supply of water for free of cost is helpful, especially for those who work in home such as water is used in cooking, drinking, and making many foods. I agree that, clean water is basic human right. Some people drink tap water in homes because they cannot afford charges to pay. So they do not drink clean water and they are affected from many diseases such as fever and abdominal pain. Due too this fact, Government should provide free water supply to homes.

On the other hand, some people waste water such as in washing cars and vehicles. Some people waste water such as running of tap water. However the Government provided water with charges and people who pay for water, they use water carefully. In big cities such as in Karachi and Islamabad have shortage of clean water. In news describe how they bring clean water in bottles from miles. In some villages, people use drainage water instead of clean water. Consequently, I partially agree and disagree for providing clean water for free of cost.

In conclusion, Government should provide enough water that are used for daily routine. However, charges to those homes who waste clean water. Drinking of clean water is necessary for every human.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing whether clean water should be provided free of charge, presenting a partial agreement stance. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited and repetitive. For example, the writer mentions that water is used for 'cooking, drinking, and making many foods' and reiterates the health risks associated with a lack of clean water without fully extending the argument with deeper analysis or concrete examples from broader social contexts. The position is stated, but the arguments regarding waste and government intervention in the second and third body paragraphs remain underdeveloped. While all parts of the prompt are touched upon, the lack of thorough idea extension keeps this performance at a Band 5.5 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay demonstrates a basic logical organisation with clear attempts at paragraphing, such as using 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to contrast the arguments, followed by a conclusion. However, the overall progression is sometimes hindered by abrupt transitions and repetitive cohesive devices. For instance, the phrase 'Some people waste water such as...' is repeated consecutively, and referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in 'Due too this fact'. Paragraphing is used, but the flow within paragraphs lacks seamless connectivity, leading to a mechanical feel. These issues align well with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary suitable for discussing the topic, such as 'basic human right', 'diseases', and 'shortage of clean water'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices throughout the text, including 'supply of water for free is advantage', 'free charged water', and 'bring clean water in bottles from miles'. Spelling and word formation errors also appear, such as 'Due too this fact'. While communication is generally maintained despite these flaws, the vocabulary remains basic and imprecise, placing it firmly in the Band 5 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as article omissions and incorrect prepositions ('water supply to home', 'work in home', 'affected from many diseases', 'water with charges'). Subject-verb agreement and sentence boundary issues also occur, as seen in 'In big cities such as in Karachi and Islamabad have shortage' and 'enough water that are used'. Although some basic sentences are formed correctly, the high frequency of intrusive errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader indicates a clear Band 5 level for grammatical accuracy.
